How did the belt lifting tool work?

Are you talking about the upright. with the adaptor that looks like an L?
I was wondering about that one as well. From the picture. It looks like it worked similar to a Hoover convertible slide in adaptor. I would think the back side of the "square" end of the adaptor was open to allow the adaptor to pass by the belt.
There for it wouldn't actually remove the belt just slipped past it on each side. Being that the bottom side would then need to be open to accommodate the belt. The cleaning performance above floor would have been non existent. in addition to what was probably a 2 or 3 amp motor at the time.

Does anyone have a picture or drawing? I still don't get how it functioned.

Kirby 519...You are right about how it was open to pass by the belt. The belt slid into the slot. Once in place, you would turn the front of the adaptor, before clipping on the hose, and it would lift the belt from the drive shaft. Much like a Kirby belt lifter. This was supposed to help lock it(the adaptor) into place, but if you tried to drag the cleaner by the hose, it more often than not would pull the whole apparatus out. Suction wasn't the best, so when we moved to a big house in 1955, our housekeeper had my mother buy the first Constellation model 82.

I know the ad said it would remove the belt. Being there were no step by step directions. Or good illustrations I was wondering how they could remove the belt. Never thought about a set up similar to the "magic finger" on the Kirby. And being open on the bottom to accommodate a belt that was still in the way. Would kill performance.
