Anyone wanting to sell a Montgomery Wards Vacuum?

My grandmother had ......

It is definitly a Eureka with the Wards name and color scheme, my grandmother gave me the money to get her one of those so I did not have to take my vacuum to her house each week to clean. It would be middle 70's and had only the low and norm setting with a vinyl bag. Hers was the blue color they had since the 60's, handle and all were the same color. Lasted for years.......obviously not the tol back then like mine was, but it still did a good job. If I remember correctly, it cost around $60 to 70 dollars back then.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay--I'm back and forth on my computer today.

Anyway, here is the technical data of the machine:

Model: SP847A
Serial: 67X 1835435
Amps: 3.3
Volts 120
Company on Label: "Montgomery Ward & Co."
Bags: Eureka F & G bags
Attachments: Model 60, Type D (complete set according to the sketch on the box)

The cord appears to be original--don't know about the bag.

If you are interested in paying $25.00 for the cleaner and attachments let me know. I don't know how much shipping would be but would only charge you the actual cost. I could just let you know after I mailed what the charges were.

Sorry, I can't take better photos. I did not see any major flaws--scratches, dents, et cetera.

The store closes at 5:00 P M. today (CDT), so unless you want to take a chance that no one else will purchase it let me know by around 4:30 P. M. if you are interested.

Alright, so I would just have to pay $25? I will give it thought. So if this is from the mid 70s, then it might actually be very nice. I have never seen a Wards that looks like this. If I do decide to buy it, how can I pay for it? Paypal or cash?

No problem about the delay, but if you decide to make the purchase you'll have to wait until I can get there again later tomorrow afternoon.

Sounds like you're in good shape to do some cleaning if you're a swimmer. Hope you had a good workout.

You would pay $25 + actual shipping with Paypal.

Actually, I didn't test it but I will. It does have a partially-filled bag, but if it seems like there's issues I'll let you know before purchasing.

It would be easier if you would let me know what your plan is sometime before late afternoon tomorrow. I don't have a smartphone, so I have to go back and forth from the store to my computer to connect with you (I made two trips there today).

So, let me know if you want to buy it if the motor sounds like it's in good shape (keep in mind that I'm not a tech, so I would just be listening for obvious defects); or if you're going to pass. Once you've made a decision I will want you to stand by it. I wouldn't want to buy it and then have you tell me that you changed your mind.

My overall impression so far is that it's in gently-used condition, and it doesn't have any offensive odors.

Some things to think about:

Do you want a MW collection of different types and colors?

Do you want just TOL machines?

Do you want to collect from a certain era?

Well I was kind of expecting a Wards with a Cord Winder from the 70s or 60s, but obviously those are impossible to find. And when one is up on ebay, there are like over 100 bids. Also I have a feeling that bag might not be original. Though I am not sure. I think it would said Wards on it. I will let you know tomorrow afternoon what my final decision is.

theyre not impossible to find. very rare yes, impossible, no. just gotta be patient. like i said, i found one at a local thrift store that harbors vintage machines and was only $13. my two commericial kirbys (comvac 1300 and american lincoln) were total dumb luck finds. i wasnt even looking for them at all.

ive been waiting over 2 years to find an all original electrolux tan g and keep very close watch on ebay. if the price is right and bids stay low, i'll snag it up. (since the tan g with original pn1 and sheath is very rare my "rare" machine limit is $100 vs $45 for common/ uncommon machines)

also dont settle for what you dont want just to have something. youll loose interest in it, since you really didnt want it, and itll be resold or worse, donated... just hang on and wait for what you really want. if it 2-3 years from now then so be it. but dont rush to grab something that isnt really wholly what youre desiring. in this community given some patience, youll find what youre looking for

Just to throw in my 2 cents worth, the bag on that economy MW Dial-a-Nap is a replacement. Montgomery Wards uprights were sold with bags sporting their own graphics and brandname.

It should clean really well though! A classic Eureka design!

I wonder if they have archived records of their appliances. There is no product history section on the website. It may be worth your while to contact them and inquire.

Familiarizing yourself with the various logos MW has had will give you an idea of the age of its cleaners, so I will post what I have found online. Depending on how involved you want your MW collection to be you could also seek to purchase MW catalogs on ebay or elsewhere. Just some thoughts.

An overview of Montgomery Ward from its homepage:

For more than 140 years, "Montgomery Ward" has been a well-known and trusted catalog brand. In 1872, Aaron Montgomery Ward established the first mail-order business with an innovative single-sheet catalog offering 163 items. Montgomery Ward's superior service and impressive assortment of goods led to rapid growth, and by 1904 the original Montgomery Ward company was mailing catalogs to three million customers.

In 2008 the "Montgomery Ward" brand was acquired by a subsidiary of The Swiss Colony, Inc. (now known as Colony Brands, Inc.), a family-owned direct-mail business that strives to continue the heritage, traditions and values of the brand that were inspired by the founder, Aaron Montgomery Ward. Today, Montgomery Ward offers one-stop shopping for quality items at affordable prices—and quick, convenient delivery.

1960s logo (marked as 1872-1968, but that doesn't seem correct):

So I made my decision. I am going to pass on this one. I'd rather wait until I find a 1960s or 1970s Wards with a Cord Winder. So you do not have to worry about buying it.
