The motor from a later XXX (1949~1952), LX, LXI, E, AE, F, S, R, L or G will fit inside a Model E. If it were me doing it, I'd get a late (tan) G motor because it's more powerful than all those before it. You'd really have a super-charged E!
I have a model E that has a model G motor in it. A little vacuum shop here is run by a former Lux salesman. He found a model G motor and put it in my machine. It's so fun to use-So quiet and powerful. It's even quieter if you put a filter in the exhaust end. I don't have one in mine right now. I have even cut a Bounce sheet to fit in it. It muffles the sound, still lets a lot of air to flow through, and freshens the house. Tim
I had an R that was wicked powerful. I dont know why but it was, I am thinking that someone might have replaced the motor. unfortuneately it wound up in the trash on moving day about 1.5 yr ago. I wish I could get another R
Never thot about a sheet of Bounce. Clever idea! Yes, the thick filters originally used in the LX, LXI, E and AE do muffle down the sound significantly, but also cut down on airflow and cause the motor to run hot. But I do occasionally use a filter in one of these machines just to remember "how they used to sound."
I have never seen an original filter. What were they made of? I have cut a filter from some filter media to fit mine. Thanks for the compliment on the Bounce sheet.
I use my E with a wall/brush attachment. (The chrome/aluminum kind with tan bristles) Was this original to the machine?
I do have the original blue dusting brush, but use a gray one from a Diamond J as well as the floor/carpet tool from it.

I remember as a kid the Filter Queen had more of a batting type post motor filter and I remember how quiet they were, now all you can find is a fiber type material as a replacement, I have a Elux E that had the original exhaust filter,I saved it but can't find it now, there is a fiber and foam a/c filter that I have been using in my vacs,it doesn't reduce the suction, but protecting the motor is important. But of course a post motor filter is not important but would really make a change in the exhaust sound.
The original LX, LXI, E and AE filter was a square pad about 3/8" thick, dark gray in color. There's an outer layer of a woven material, maybe cotton?, then an inner layer of of a fibrous type of material. I don't know what it's made of, it's not cotton batting but something else.
Speaking of Electrolux exhaust filters, Aerus still makes/sells them for the Canadian 80 series models, although they're quite a bit thinner and made of a different material. I remember that the old ones were thick and "woolly". Going on the same logic as US Lux with regards to removing the filter because of the better filtration of the bags, I wonder why Canadian Lux never did the same?
Here's a question about the Model G. Why did the tan G do away with the perforations/vents/whatever they are around the chrome end/cord winder?
The Canadian Electroluxes always had a filter because the power loss with one is negligible (unless you let it plug up) yet they eliminated alot of the extra dust being kicked out of the machine and made it much quieter (both features that Electrolux advertised and caplitalized on).
If you notice all the new, so called "delux", machines have secondary filters on them now too.
