Hi all am thinking of getting a carpet shampooer,what you all recommend?
Any advice what is a good carpet shampooer

Hmm...
I have never had experience with anything other than a rug doctor (the commercial ones) and a steam vac. I think the steam vac is a good one. You can find them for cheap, and do a good job.

I have had a Hoover steam cleaner for 10 years and it has done a good job. I'm sure that the newer Hoovers will do even a better job. Ck them out !

I'm Happy So Far...
...With my Bissell ProHeat 2X. They do have a learning curve, and some of the shop owners here tell me that you have to be careful with them to avoid breaking parts, but the cleaning ability is phenomenal.

I like my Hoover Steam Vac. I have only had it three years but it gets a lot of use. If you choose it do not get one of the Dual V ones they are not as good, I returned mine after one month it would not pick up right.
Also If price is not of much concern I like the Thermax shampooer(the professional one with the 300 w heater and 3 gallon stainless steel solution and return tanks) They sell for a fairly new one on ebay for $1k. we used to have an old one from the mid 80's and it was great and worth the money.

Rug Dr. or Steam-Vac
Hi guys. I had a steam vac 5 brush, I used it ALOT,I got it in 1997 and used it for side-job cleaning for friends, friends of friends etc... then I got the Dual V. What a mistake, Now i have a Rug - Doctor that I got 2 years ago to do side jobs again. I work at a hospital so getting side jobs is fairly easy so its had a ton of use also. I have not done much to eather machine except for replacing the scrub brushes. BTW the steam-vac I gave to a friend and it is still going strong. So I would recommend both If you are going to use it alot. As for the Bissell like Sandy said they are great machines but you must use more caution with the plasic components.

I have a Hoover Steam Vac that I like, but I've heard that Royal actually produces the best on the market. I don't remember where I read or heard that, though.

I chose the bissell pro heat
There were two nice shampooers at the goodwill auction one was a really nice kenmore spin scrub,and the pro heat I chose the pro heat because of the double revolving brushes and it just looks like a well designed machine.I know the person who got the kenmore and I could probably buy it from him for $10.00 I will see how this pro heat works out.

Some people don't like the scrubber (vs extractor), but I've had the best results with the Electrolux FloorPro. You can get one on ebay for around $100, and they clean up perfectly if they've been used at all. I think a lot of people don't use them more than once before they're sold. The last shampooing I did was with a Kirby, and it works well, too. If you really want an extractor, of course these won't be appropriate.

When I used my ProHeat for the first time, I over-wet the carpet and did not rinse as much as I should have; I was also moving the machine too fast. The result was poor; a couple of stains wicked back up, and the carpet re-soiled pretty quickly.
What I've learnt to do is to use the cleaning setting for only one pass, taking care not to over-wet. Then I rinse twice. I am also careful not to move the machine too fast; a little patience worked wonders.
