I have a Kirby G4 here that I bought new. Started making a funny sound back in 2006. Earlier last year, it violently locked up. Found the fan like this and for the life of me cannot get the spindle loose. Is there a way to lock the armature on these?

Dude

Hold the fan get a hex bit and spin off the spindle. I have had issues but with spindle no issues.
If you use duck tape around base get good channel locks it will come loose. My royal 2025 had a spindle and I held fan with hand duck tape channel locks it came off easy. I didn't know it had a spindle until I got replacement fan. WD-40 duck tape around base channel locks. I used screw driver on royal just in case to keep armature blade from spinning. Royal fans are harder than Kirby fans too take off. My 880 fan aluminum I basically ripped fan off armature and busted to pieces. But the tape trick I just learned. I used to use vice grips but my channel locks work better. I have channel locks brand and Ryobi brand. Ryobi brand sucks.

You can buy a purpose-made Kirby Armature-locking Tool for help with removing fans;
eBay "Kirby Armature Fan Locking Tool Hold Armature - T130"
One of the USA Kirby suppliers has them also. But a screwdriver used with caution achieves the same task.

Perhaps try grinding or filing two flats on the shaft to fit an adjustable spanner?

Tool

The Kirby tool is a POS. It's made of crappy metal. The g series I don't know there is a place to access armature to use the tool. It wouldn't help on g series machines.

Ah, that's good to know Les. I was think about buying one of those tools! Come to think of it, they do have that pot-metal look.
I wouldn't know too much about 'modern' G-Series fans, only ever had to change Tradition, Legend, and Heritage. Fancy them changing access to the motor armature. That's not really progress.

G series

The removal tool is bad. G series all have amodel fan with impellor. You simply get a hex key to fit in spindle. You hold fan with hand and spin the spindle comes off.
Speaking of give up the ghost. The song by Ella Henderson reminds me of this girl who wrecked her car died and rescuers saved baby in the back seat.
The wreck was about 350 yards from my house. It's on TV right now. It's travel channel paranormal emergency.
Don the river ahalf ablock is my house.

Remove the handle pivot assembly. Using a proper sized wrench, Place it on the other side of the transmission drive spindle that comes off the back of the motor. Turn the Armature and The wrench will drop down and lock the Armature. Then you can remove the fan. I can’t believe in all those replies nobody actually told him how to do it. It’s very simple.

Dysonman

It has a spindle. I mentioned hold fan and the spindle comes off. I imagine you are telling him how to take out armature.
Twist off spindle take off fan replace.
Put in neutral take screw on bottom center off. Take screw off neutral drive 4 body screws 2 body screws and you access carbon brush and it also drops the transmission.

I could be wrong but the spindle spun opposite of direction of fan. Once removed the fan comes off.
