Gareth I think that's a bit of a stretch. There's a lot more behind the scenes in China than the average tourist will see. What they say and what they actually practice are sometimes totally opposite. For instance I was just reading an article the other day about the prevalance of Hepititis B in China. Something in the order of 20 percent of the Chinese population have it and it became the norm that anyone including children had to take a test for it for everything including enrolling in kindergarten, applying for a job etc. marriage. Those that test positive are systematically denied and shunned. The prejudice is so ingrained that those people have to resort to paying hundreds of dollars they can ill afford to cheat and do illegal things, such as getting a stand in to go for the blood test for a job interview. Praying their children will never slip and mention it etc.. The Chinese govt has made strides making it illegal to do those tests but there is little to no enforcement of them. Like most things they turn a blind eye and are quick to hammer down on any dissent. It is getting better, very very slowly and will take years if ever.. decades and more. But it isn't a free society. They put on a good show of making that appearance "in certain zones/cities/areaas where they do afford "some" freedoms. But in the big picture it is absolutely not a free society because they do not have the right to exercise a vote for their government.

Look at all those fabulous pictures of how the big cities in China are becoming so modern, all the new buildings and freeways and cars cars cars everywhere whereas 20 or so years ago there was nothing but fields and houses that the poor people lived in.. Well what happened to those poor people and their houses? They were and are still being turfed out by the thousands today with little or no compensation and sent packing and forgotten. It's sickening, have you not seen any of the documentaries and news stories that have gotten out regarding that?

Or the hidden camera exposes on the plight of the poor farmers and families who's land is now so polluted that they can no longer grow any food on it and what food they might be able to grow is unfit to heat.. These are not "made up" anti-Chinese propaganda things.. They're true and factual in a way actually benefit the Chinese by opening the eyes of westerners as to what really goes on and shame the Chinese government into making changes.

I taught a lot of REAL CHINESE students

They're not here for the food!  Thet told me how they ARE "allowed" only one child.  IF they have others,  they must PAY ther government to "count them".  If not,  they are discarded.  A group of THEM live in fields, and they are known as,  are  you ready??  "the black people"!!!!!! They meet similar people, become families, and continue that way.  Factory workers aren't ever allowed to use, have, buy ANY of the products sent over here.  MOST have absolutely no idea that another life exists outside of their own,  and, the govt WANTS it that way.  Some are sent over here, educated, then sent back over there. One student told me that her sister makes Ralph Lauren clothes in a factory.  She makes about 22 CENTS an hour....in 2011 !!!!!!!! When asked,  they ALL say  that there is So much over here.  BUT,  they still love China...SOME, only some, refer to us as the "dumb Americans". and, when a baby BOY is born,  they're thrilled.  When a girl is born,  they  really don't care too much. Sad,  really.  Sometimes, they give the girl away.  I taught a woman  who was SOLD as a child.

My aunt went there on a vacation.  She said it was filthy, they all got sick, Kaopectate was in high demand.  She's glad she saw it all,  but would NEVER go back.  I'm NOT BASHING.... do I bash?  NEVER..  I'm just relaying what the real Chinese told me.  AND,  the "Chinese" food we buy over HERE  is like Chinese fast food.....they never eat it.  It's like "Asian Mc Donalds"  to them.

With all of the Elextrolux, Aerus,  etc....  i hope there's no TEST.  My head is spinning from the transactions.  I'm not bashing electrolux... do I bash?   Never.

John .22 cents an hour

What A high paid worker. I saw a story on 20/20 where the children as young as 8 or 9 worked 16 hour days in a Nike factory. At the end of their shift they got to take two carrots from the pile to take home. So generous to their employees, no wonder they can afford to produce goods so much less expensive than us dumb American's

Give me Dumb, capitalistic, America any day.

Indeed!

And, I MEANT,  ALL of our beloved vacs ...to be made here, once again.  Can you imagine what would happen over "there' if, when some people stand up, revolt, whatever?  They need a Rosa parks........ There will be a riot to end all riots! Some HOOVER bags, etc, are still made here. Some are made in Texas...I'm sure parts were made.........................

I'm getting tidbits about the potential TTI... but can't discss until it becomes  clearer, closer,  more officcial.

hey guys , I never ment to upset any one, I.ve been to china many times, all on business while working for vacuum manufactureres and like any country there are bad and good sides.there are some horrendous human rights issues going on there but there are allot in the rest of the world as well

I do howver think that people tend to veiw it as a giant sweat shop. while I know these do exist, the vacuum factory's I went to are run with such precision it would make a german factory look backwards. the streets are cleaner than most European city's I've been to. yes there are problems but show me a country with out them.

As for vacuums been made there I blame all our governments for no tax incentives to many unions and making importation the cheaper option.

when I worked for Electrolux here in SA we manufactured every vacuum we sold here even when import duties dropped most machine were still made here and we exported too. However striking workers always looking for more and more pay ended the company's production facility's for ever. It was better to import, no striking workers no delays in delivery.

I can still remember them warning the factory workers that if the strikes carried on  they would simply close the factory, they didn't take the warning seriously and boom a few months later with yet another strike pending they retrenched 500 factory staff and most of the R&D staff leaving 20 factory staff and 2 R&D staff to continue with the 2 products they would still make her, 3 years ago they shut that down too

THe beloved old Electroluxes were only sold in the US mainly and different models were manufactured and sold in Canada with a few exceptions I believe.. There were some common elements to the attachments etc and some radically different , the hose connections were also different between the US and Canadian Eluxes. The Super J for one was sold in Canada and not sure about others.. Doug would know.

SUPER» J

I think SUPER J model was at the beginning oly sold in United States. But when Electrolux's Canadian employees went on strike, They decided to sell SUPER J in Canada.

re the Super J in Canada.. yeah that sounds right. I found mine here in town at the Goodwill or SallyAnn but I can never be sure with some things since I'm in a border town it's always quite possible that people bought something in Michigan
