Last year I bought the Shark Powered True Pet Rotator and ended up sending it back because I didn't like how it handled with the hose and handle. So I have been using my Rainbow. Well I finally made the decision to purchase a brand new Aerus Electrolux Classic. And I love it. With the amount of dog hair that we have I also bought the sidekick and love how well it works on the furniture and the stairs.

I'm pretty sure my Grandma is smiling down on me. Every vacuum she ever owned was a Electrolux. One time she bought a Oreck and sent it back after a week of having it.
 
The Lux Guardian Platinum has a much different motor, built by a completely different company than the Classic model. The Guardian does have a little more zip to it, but it's not really perceptible to your hand when placed over the end of the hose. The two are 'statistically' equals at cleaning power. I have definitely enjoyed using the new HEPA cloth bags (type C) in my Electrolux(Aerus) machines, as it keeps the bag compartment spotless. The blue Aerus bags leak fine dust and clog fairly fast.
 
Seems I remember someone saying that Lux used the same motors for all machine's. I seem to recall all the canisters having the same air wattage figures at one time. I'm not sure how that's working now that Aerus is importing the Platinum. Incidentally, losing a whole boatload of vacuums to the Atlantic Ocean was one of their reasons for building machine's in the US. I guess Aerus is willing to take the risk.

 The Lux Legacy and the Lux Classic are pretty much the same under the hood at 439 Air watts.


 


The Guardian Platinum is a different animal with four stage filtration and a 525 air watt capabilities.  The GP is imported.

guardian platinum

The main problem I have with the guardian platinum is that it has a nonstandard hose end, although I think there is an adapter to get around that, but the power nozzle hook up is also nonstandard, so you are limited to using only that power nozzle. With other vacuums that have a standard female connector, you can use several different power nozzles.
 
I've always seen comparing the

Classic and the Legacy against the Platinum like comparing apples to oranges, at least when looking at those specs with air watts, waterlift, etc

I agree Tom & Mike, cloth bags are usually always to go. However, I've heard of owners having their warranties voided for using non Aerus paper bags. I don't get why, and and don't kow how true it is. Hopefully nobody here has encountered that. It always makes sense to use cloth bags whenever possible.
 
I bought a classic for my mom , she kept overheating the Diamond Jubilee , she loves it . It's light and powerful and cleans super well. She has 2 cats and a Rottweiler.its the 90 year anniversary black one.

I have the 90th Anniversary Black one as well and I do. I love it!!! What is funny is that Jacob has even been doing more housework lately. He likes using it. What is funny about this is that he always avoided vacuuming because he never liked my Rainbow. When we first met his vacuum was just a big shop vacuum.

I am cleaning today and will use it. It is actually a fun vacuum to use.
 
Mom was using her Aerus because it was light & easy for her to use plus no filters to wash or routine maintenance & now since I had a central vacuum installed in her home the other one just sits in the garage under the central unit.
 
I wanted to put a Central Cleaning System in. However when I had people come out to see how it could be done my house is well over 100 years old and I was told that it would be extremely difficult for the second story to be done. They said the main floor would be easy but the second story layout while possible was going to be a mess and time consuming. It's not a big deal. I don't mind carrying the vacuum up and down the stairs.
 
If you really wanted one badly a good central vac installer would figure it out. Usually you can run it through a down stairs closet to reach the second floor.
 
vacuum overheating

Interesting that you said your mom's vacuum kept overheating. Usually that indicates a problem with the motor or a clog somewhere. Regarding the issue of Aerus bags, I'm not sure if using cloth bags would void the warranty either, but I use a cloth bag in my classic, and my electrolux 1205 and Alympia. The fact that Aerus themselves only offer paper bags indicates that they are behind the times a bit.
 
The Central Cleaning System was possible.

I was told that it was possible to install a central cleaning system. But I was told that with the layout of my upstairs I would have to put an inlet in every bedroom. I wanted to just put a central inlet in my upstairs hallway but because of the age and layout that would have not worked. Unless I did all direct connect inlets or went with a air powered turbo brush. I wanted a electric brush instead.

It's okay. I have what I want with my Classic and my Rainbow.
