Currently, we only have 6 hours to edit a post. However, I find that when I update a long thread about a machine, I cannot edit the thread title to show new content. On other forums (for cars), I create a thread, and keep it as a project log, amending the title everytime something happens, so 'Citroen XM - Timing Belt' turns into 'Citroen XM - Wheel Bearing' as and when etc. The post then gets added as normal to the end of the thread.

Any chance of being able to do that here? And possibly a 'Projects and Restorations' sub-forum for projects or restorations? I find cracking restoration threads get buried under general chat type posts. I for one live seeing machines getting restored, and watching how people do it, I imagine I'm not alone!

Hi Sam,

One of the first important things we learn in "webmaster" school is to set a small window of time for editing or deleting posts. There are many reasons for this, the most important reason is to prevent a user from destroying a thread. What can happen is days, months or years later a member gets annoyed by something on the site and goes and deletes all of their posts within many threads. This can leave big holes in threads and essentially ruins them.

So no, after experimenting early on 6 hours seemed to be the best time window.

The title however can be changed as well as anything else within the time limit.

One thing I would suggest that VL have is pages on the threads.

For example, when I want to see what the latest post is on a thread which is loaded with pictures I've already seen, I have to load them all up just to see what somebody has said. If there were pages to the threads then I could just go to the last page and skip past the information I've already read.

Just a suggestion.

Have you tried the "[Down To Last]" button at the top of the beginning of each thread (on the right-hand side)? It will take you to the very last thing posted in the thread. If you have frequently looked at that thread prior to this time, you won't have far to go "backwards" to where you had viewed it last time. Does that make sense? I'm not sure that wording is understandable....John

I do use the "down to last" button, but the computer still needs to load up all the pictures all the same and my computer is prone to freezing up in those circumstances.

Sam:

You might also like to know that upgraded memberships permit the user to search all forums, not just Vintage and Household.

This might be a reason for some to upgrade if they haven't already; thread titles don't matter so much if one can search on specific words of interest.

I've no idea whether you're a standard or upgraded member, so you may already have this capability. If you don't have it, and you would like to have it, upgrading is only $12 (a bit less than £8) per year. Lesser amounts of time are available at a lesser cost; click on "UPGRADE MEMBERSHIP" at the upper right of this page for more information. Payments are accepted via PayPal, which takes care of all currency conversion for you.

If the upgrade also included a page feature for threads I would definitely upgrade my membership as I feel it is one thing that VL could really benefit from.

Hi Jamie, I have no idea what you mean by a "page feature for threads". Can you please explain further?

What I mean is to separate threads into pages.

For example, the first 10 posts would be page 1, then the next 10 would be page 2 etc...

That way if I wanted to see the latest post in a thread I'd been following, I could just click on the last page rather than load up the entire thread (which may include lots of pictures).

I hope you understand what I mean.

OK thanks I now understand what you mean. I personally dislike forums that you can't read the entire thread all at once, but at some point I might have to implement that to control bandwidth. Right now that is not in the works.
