Wow what a find! I always thought the Miele was the same size as the Hoover. Still miss my old black S571 though.

Ryan, I think it would be better to compare the Miele with a more high end, full sized cleaner of the era like a Sensotronic or Lux 2000 series. The Miele may be a heck of a lot bigger and bulkier than the Compact, but it's certainly ligher, quieter, more solid and higher performing.

The suction is incredible, but when using the cleaner on carpet (thanks to a well designed floortool) it just glides along, picking up everything in it's path. It leaves some lovely track marks in the carpet that you rarely see with a straight suction cleaner.

I managed to pick up a NIB turbo brush to match this cleaner, but so far I have not felt the need to use it. I'll get some pics and a better video up with the turbo brush at the weekend.

The same applies to my old Moulinex Powerclean cylinder vac. Eventually parted with it after a few good years. It was taller and wider than my Hoover Telios. Loved that machine as it had super suction for only 1300 watts.

My Aunt Sally has an 80's Moulinex cylinder. It's red and a similar shape and size to a Senostronic. It's probably one of the sturdiest cylinders I've ever used and it's relatively quiet. It's out-lived all her uprights - Turbopower U2602, Dyson DC04, Electrolux Velocity and is now accompanied by a Sebo Felix.

Tazcatsdad has done a great video on the similar model, the 1350. Mine was yellow - but I note that whilst his has metal pipes, mine had metal pipes that were covered in black PVC, originally supplied with a commercial tub vacuum. Super T from Yahoo Group also kindly sent me an original floor head many moons ago, a Morphy Richards type head from that era, 35mm sized. Had it for many years and the vacuum - one of the best, probably quite unusual for the fact that it is reasonably quiet and just does the job intended.

The one I had was made in France - the black pipes were identical to the ones supplied with a canister vac I once saw in a shop called "Mastervac" and had the identical black 2 way floor head with an orange pedal. The black pipes had slats up each side which I thought were very sporty at the time - very good idea because the suction tubes lasted a lot longer than the Moulinex body. Still appreciated the vacuum though as it had super suction and that lift out bag carrier which is really cool.

Years later, Vax brought out a bagged cylinder vacuum called the VS09 which was very similar to the Moulinex but with a slightly different body but used the same dust bags. Eventually Vax replaced the model with the "Swift VS-075".

I bought one of these last year in a very 1970's light tan colour as I had the Sebo version for many years for my K series. The rotary wheel is novel but the actual turbo brush isn't very powerful compared to the more modern version. I currently have a beige one I bought recently to match my green C2 but yet again it isn't very powerful with either vacuum or either brand.

For info, although these came out in the mid-late 80's, they were still around into the early 90's as the budget cylinder.

I knew I recognized your red (rot)Miele Chris! It is from the late 80's or very early 90's. I saw a full page color magazine add for either Visa or MasterCard with Jerry Seinfeld as the promoter. He was poised on the back of a moving van with that vacuum, or one very similar. If the caption on the page said "everywhere you want to be" it was Visa. I just don't recall.
Sam (beko) like the Turkish appliances? They had some issues with refrigerator/ freezer fires.
Funky? It displays the evolution of Miele since their first abs plastic canisters. Like BMW, and Mercedes and Audi/VW cars? The early to mid 80's 280 series were all white on the sides, with a color inset on the top.
Chris, I believe the hoover is heavier. It may be from the motor, which may be a heavier all steel design, while Miele may have already been using a plastic partial housing. Miele brags about their skeleton design on the latest C3 (funky)?? models. Maybe they were already using that then as well. They say it is lighter than their C2 series. Their C1 series are made in China, and are not hepa sealed systems. Marketers often re invent new names for already in place technology. I notice it lacks a place at the exhaust for a hepa filter.

Mike, this is from the days long before HEPA filters were fitted to vacuums.

Here is the brochure from October 1988 for this cleaner. By this point and into the early 90's, the new models had come out and this design became the budget model, which is a practive that Miele still operate today.
