a broken Convertible

I have just picked up a convertible at a thrift store.It is a top fill with a red and orange bag.When I went to clean the brush area I looked up into the fan chamber to my surprise no fan I thought that maybe I couldnt see it so I took it apart down to the main motor the only thing left was the center of the fan were the blades connected.I need to know how to remove the fan so I can replace it.I can post a picture of it if need any advice will be deeply apreciated.thanks

Replacing a Convertible Fan

Hey, Cindy--This is Nathan Thomas, I think I can help you. I have worked on some convertibles over the years. The fan has a pulley that holds it onto the armature shaft, and the pulley is what the belt for the brushroll slips over. To remove the pulley, I usually use a flat-head screwdriver with a fairly large head. If I remember correctly, all of the convertibles' pulleys have a left-handed thread, so to remove the pulley, it will be as if you are tightening it, in other words, turn the pulley clockwise. You may have to take the top part of the motor apart, in order to hold your armature from turning. Once you get the pulley off, you should be able to remove what is left of the fan. It is highly unlikely that you can buy a metal fan anymore, most parts nowadays are the hard lexan plastic. Make sure you pay close attention to the order of the washers, there is usually a washer on the bottom of the fan and a washer that fits on the top of the fan, that the pulley will tighten down on. While you have the motor apart it's a good idea to clean it good. The older style convertible Hoovers are pretty good vacuums. To re-assemble, simply reverse the steps, and to tighten the pulley you will turn it counterclockwise, or to the left. It is my experience with working on the older Hoovers like that, the threads on the armature shaft are left-handed. Thank you I thought I had seen that on here befor I will try that tonight.Should I get a 12 fan blade or a 6.I have a attachment set.Is there anyway to turn the motor up because this is not a model that the attachments attach to the back.

Hoover Fan

Hey, Cindy--I would say that probably that Hoover had a fan with 6 blades on it, if I recall correctly, I have bought replacement fans for those before, and they usually have 6 blades, and are a black-colored lexan plastic, usually they cost around $10.00 or so, it's been awhile since I've priced them. As for the two speeds, I think that the older models had a switch that the hose would touch when using the vacuum with the attachments. As for using the vacuum with the switch on High speed, I wouldn't recommend it, as running it that way is a good way to pre-maturely burn up the motor. I generally use a canister vacuum rather than an upright when I need to do edge cleaning or furniture, an old canister Electrolux works well for that--Anyway--Holler if you need any other help. Nathan
