Dyson filters

I have a Dyson DC24 which I am VERY happy with. I wish it was available years ago as I really think this machine is great. I have owned the DC03, DC04 and DC05 as big cleaners and have a DC16 as a spare little handheld one. Still prefer DC24 over the bigger ones.

I have one thing which doesn't bother me too much but just wanted to enquire to as I have always had this with Dyson regardless of it was the small handheld, the DC04 or this machine. When it comes to cleaning the Pre Motor filter it is covered in hair which has escaped the inner cyclone assembly, there is no suction lost or anything but just thins big build up of hair, I do not over fill the bin at all.

This seems to occur more with the DC24 as with the DC04 and 05 the filter wash interval was 6 months whereas the DC24 is once a month so it seems more hair accumulates on the DC24 filter than it did on others (again I do empty on time the others where Dual Cyclones where as this is a Root Cyclone.

Just wanted to see really if anyone else has this with their Dyson machines. We have one person in the house who has such long hair and it seems to be her hair that gets on the pre motor filter and the hair that entwinds on the brushbar.

It is possible that you find the issue more exaggerated with the DC24 than your previous Dysons, because the bin is smaller than other models, and distance between the bin-wall and the shroud is smaller. Therefore, there's less room for the debris to be flung away from the shroud, and it's perhaps more likely that some will get through. However, it is odd that quite so much hair gets through as that - I've never seen or experienced that before.

I just wanted to enquire on here on others who may have this on theirs also. I do not see it as a problem as such just curious as to other experiences.

Dyson was contacted a few years back when I experienced this with my DC04 and to be honest, they had no clue why it occurs.

Brainstorming

Do you use carpet fresh or suck up fine powder for some other reason? I ask that because it's apparent that even large debris are not being thrown from the airstream. The physics of a Dyson are really fascinating. Lowering the airflow in a system like that starts a positive feedback system whereby particles increasingly escape the system and hit the filter, thus further reducing airflow, thus further decreasing the removal of particles by the cyclones, and so on. Your puzzle here is a "chicken or the egg" quandry, but my first guess is that something got sucked up that lowered the airflow and led to the situation shown in your photos.

Another possibility.

Can you think of any circumstance that would cause moisture to get into the machine, such as damp carpets or wet debris? I bet that would reduce airflow either internally by obstructing the shroud or inner passages or clogging the filter.

I think you could test this by applying an airflow meter to your machine and to a brand new machine as a baseline. If airflow is reduced, I think you have your answer. If it isn't, then my hypothesis is incorrect.

Sleepdoc. No I do not use carpet powder nor has the machine tipped over.

I have advised this has occured with all my Dyson machines because someone in the house has very very long fine hair. Only SOME hairs pass through the cyclones onto the filter. I am not sure where you got this about moisture going into the machine?? This has nothing to do with it and I do not use my Dyson on a damp floor.

The only Dyson I used for 3 years or so that never let hair onto the pre motor filter was the DC03.

Do you have a Dyson and if u do, wot are ur experiences of using it?

I only seem to get a little dust on my dc 18 slim,that's it, even with long hair cat.

Hmmm... I have the odd hair or two make it to the filter but nothing that significant.

Moisture

I wasn't suggesting that moisture was anything other than a potential occult perpetrator of reduced airflow.

I have ten Dysons in my collection. I've never had the problems you have. I've credited my good care of the machines, frequent checking of the pre-filters, and never using anything that would likely get through the cyclones to the filter such as carpet powders or moisture with this. I've helped lots of friends with their Dysons that have clogged pre-filters. All of them (not enough to be more than anecdotal) have either gotten wet or sucked up carpet fresh.

The one time I got a lot of dirt on a pre-filter in one machine was when I let someone borrow my DC07 Carpet, and she sucked up carpet powder in it. It wasn't the same until I disassembled it and blew the cyclone assembly out with an air compressor. Meanwhile, the pre-filter repeatedly collected a lot of dust.
