Antique floor lamps

A few weeks ago, there was an old floor lamp for $12.99 at Goodwill.

It had the mogul socket in center with white glass bowl over it, and the 3 smaller sockets on arms around it. It also had a marble looking insert on the base, which I believe was a night light, as there was a push button switch on the base next to it.

I saw it a couple of times when I went there but kept deciding I didn't need it. It was painted an icky beige color that I don't believe was original. I wish now I hadn't passed it up.

Another thrift store near me has a similar lamp, except it's bronze in color and there is no night light nor marble insert in the base. They want $35.

This weekend I went to a flea market and saw another one, this one was a brassy color and was missing the glass bowl on the inner socket. It had a sort of wrought iron pattern for the base but I couldn't tell if there was a light there or not, no switch was on the base. I didn't see a price and didn't ask for it.

I really think these lamps are interesting but I'd love to see another with the night light feature. I'm still disappointed in myself in passing up the first one, especially given the price.

Usually I didn't pay much attention to lamps but I have been on the lookout for older ones lately.

There are 3 here in the house.  One was IN the house when my parents bought it in 1958.  It had the nightlight. The base got damaged beyond repair, but, I kept the globe.  A few yrs back, I saw a 'lamp' in a thrift store.  I took it home,  great  news!  That old globe fit it!  There are 2 Lenox china lamps, 'torchiers'.  They had the mogul bases too.  I had both rewired and 'retrofitted ' for a regular bulb. I matched the paint  and repainted /restored them myself  The man who did them (restores lamps)   admired them.   My sister is reminded of a funeral home.  I like them.  I can post a few pics.

Just don't use the red funeral home bulbs in them! Eerie!

I know what you mean...

I remember my grandmother's funeral about 25 or 30 years ago. The funeral home had these art nouveau floor lamps with pink glass shades set at either end of her casket. I couldn't even go in there.

I also recall the Winn-Dixie and A&P supermarkets near my house both using pink fluorescent lights in the meat department to make things look fresher. It always creeped me out when I was a kid. Here I was at less than ten years old, wondering what they were trying to hide.

They are 'art deco' style and are at least 100 years old.  They had a mogul base bulb.  I had them re-wired and retro-fitted to take easier, standard bulbs.

Oh no another thing to collect!

So since this post, I’ve become the owner of several floor lamps!

I’ve really become attached to these six way floor lamps, having a center 3 way socket and 3 sockets on arms surrounding it.

I had finally found one after missing out on the cream colored one at Goodwill. This one a bronze color, but unfortunately missing its center glass bowl.

Several weeks ago I came upon another of these lamps, in an antique brass color, with its original bowl.

Two weeks later another turned up there, this one a beige color, also with a night light in the base with star shaped holes to shine through.

Then this past weekend I went to a fan meet for the first time since 2020. One seller has yet another of these lamps in a brass and white color with a glass night light in the base. This one is missing its glass bowl, hopefully the spare one I found can fit. I’ve been picking up the milk glass reflector bowls I see at thrift shops.

So now I’m all lamped out. Ocd and collecting I guess.

Sometimes I get that feeling Edgar mentioned in his story about finding the Kirby. Fallen off the bandwagon again!

I feel your pain.
It's so weird how it works. Something that you've never paid attention to in the past, you suddenly feel the need to own multiples of.
For me, I know it started in very early childhood. I had all but forgotten about it, but I think the first thing I collected (or hoarded) was rocks. Of course, having been car obsessed since before I could talk, I also started amassing Matchbox cars.
It just blew up from there. Hubcaps. More diecast vehicles of different scales. Kerosene lanterns. Highway barricade lights. Bicycles. BB and pellet guns. Telephones. Of course, vacuums. Random small appliances. I don't know if it qualifies as a collection, but I now have two Maytag wringer washers; neither of which is useable.
I know I'm forgetting things. If I had the financial means, I know I'd have a fleet of real vehicles.
In my case, I believe I'm a certified hoarder. It seems like most of you are able to keep it at a relatively healthy level; where your collections can be displayed and enjoyed without interfering with your ability to live in your house. I've crossed that line.

I hear ya, Barry,

I have that type of obsessive personality, and I know I come by it honestly. My dad and both of his parents were the same way. There was a room at the top of the stairs at my grandparents' house, which had had its door altered so that it opened outward, instead of inward, so that more junk could be piled inside. And I've inherited the majority of my dad's toy collection (electric trains, model cars, etc., etc., etc.). It's taking up most of the space in my barn and all of a 10'x20' rented storage unit that's costing me $200 a month. I was making fairly good money selling that stuff off on eBay as a side hustle, but there are so many fingers in the pie now (eBay, shippers, PayPal, state sales tax, and now the IRS, if you sell more than $600 a year) that it's hardly worth the effort to sell it off piecemeal. I really need to have an auction and move at least enough of it to get out from under the storage unit. I've also thought of renting a booth at one of these antique malls to sell some stuff that way. I'd have to figure out how to display it, though.

I found a beautiful old floor lamp on the curb on Friday. I had the day off and was coming home from the gym, otherwise I may never have taken that route.

It had the center mogul bulb and the 3 other sockets. I believe this one may also have a night light at the top of the pole as well from the looks of things. Missing the glass bowl reflector, but came with a very nice mid century fiberglass lamp shade also.

I had the mogul bases changed on all of mine.  Very hard., expensive, and hot to use mogul.
