Turbo 500

It was the first New vacuum I bought when I worked at Electrolux, I had a Metallic Green 1200watt model. The contour 2 also had a proper pedal release. It was our top of the range vacuum at Electrolux in the 90's and it was replaced by the widetrack , which I still have, I love the wide track.

So it is purely sentimental for me.

From the middle of 1994, all UK Contour and Airstream (later Airclean) upright cleaners had a foot pedal. The actual mechanism which locked the handle was already present on older models, following an upgrade to the original Contour range, a short while before it was discontinued in 1994. Electrolux fitted a single lock to the chassis to latch into the front of the motor hood and this was much better than the original two plastic friction locks on the rear of the hood. However, as the user was still required to yank the handle back to release it, this modification was also liable to fail, resulting in the handle falling backwards, or the cleaning head dropping down when the cleaner was carried.

The foot pedal was the third and final attempt to solve the problem, and it worked. The plastic pedal operated a metal bar which then moved the lock away from the motor hood so that the handle could be lowered. Across the whole Contour range from start to finish were two faults which were never modified and which helped keep my repair service going. One was the stupid narrow hose inside the hood, which, and as if being so narrow was not sufficient to cause a blockage on it's own, was also twisted around a 90 degree bend. The other fault was the mains lead which exited the cleaner on the rear in a straight line, without any additional protection, and was often pulled so hard during cleaning that the inner cores either snapped and rendered the cleaner dead, or short circuited with a loud bang.

Turbo500, it is indeed odd to hear of a later Contour without the ESP logo. Do you suppose it was a very late model? Was it an exclusive line I wonder?

Re Contours

I am fairly sure that I too have seen a photo of a non-ESP'd later series Contour, but only in one or two model forms. Though not 100% certain, I will try and find the image.

Chris and Rob - after the discussions at the weekend re the Hitachi CV775D - lookie what I found courtesy of KAYS Spring Summer 1998....
