1989 Electroluz Z616E

So i got this off ebay with two other vacs ( i will most likely do a thread on one of the others hint its a turbopower 1 ) for £15 went and picked them up on sunday April 19th 2015 and already cleaned one up and this one. So as per usual before pictures and then afters. Enjoy!

I did note that when testing this on wind down it made this grinding kind of noise. Thats because the fan chamber's tape had lost its stickiness so it was loose and causing it to spin with the fans.

Wishy Washy

For anyone who doesn't know or hasn't read alot of my threads I keep having a tendency to keep putting "Wishy Washy" for when it comes to washing the plastics

Congratulations on your new finds. They have cleaned up well. What do you use to polish the vacs.

To polish i use Wilko's own brand dash board spray polish ( 2x coats ) then to seal it all in i use "Lord Sheraton caretaker wood balsam" ( 2x coats )

I have to buff it all out by hand ( unfortunately ) so i use three different cloths. Gradually getting to softer cloths.

I am disappointed to see what I can only assume was an oversight by Electrolux in reply #6 where it states that the bag should be "emptied regularly" rather than REPLACED. 


 


This would have led to a lot of people using bags over and over, which people already tried to do anyway, they didn't need encouragement from the manufacturer!

No, Jamie. Most brands back then, Hoover included, had a bag slide so that the bag could be emptied instead of instantly disposed of. Electrolux recommended using a bag twice before throwing it away. I believe Hoover was the same.

Bit of history....

The Electrolux 600 series was launched in - the first domestic upright in the UK to feature a built in hose and was advertised as "the vac with the hose at the back".


 


The original lineup was the 610 and 612 Electronic and were Electrolux top of the line upright. The lower spec uprights were the 551 and 561, which were more modern variations on the older 500 series that had been in production since 1971.

The original 610 and 612 were riddled with problems - bits snapping off and hoses splitting, plus a major issue with the chassis cracking. There were a heap of variations on the 610 and 612 with very slight design modifications, until they were superseded by the 614 and 616 in 1989. The 614 and 616 were pretty much identical the the 610 and 612 except for the colour, but had many subtle design changes to make them more solid.

The 600 series was discontinued in 1991 after the launch of the Contour (which was, in my opinion, a far inferior cleaner but more solid).

Below is a pic from Argos Spring-Summer 1989 where you can see both the 614 and 616. You can also see the z1055 and z1065, which were the mid-range uprights at the time with the 400 "Lite" uprights being the BOL.

Fair point, although the wording implies that replacement is not necessary and therefore people would go by the sticker and discard the "use twice only" notice on the bag in most cases.

What a nice blast from the past! An old next door neighbour had one of these when I was young, never knew what type of Electrolux it was. It always had a taped together hose - this was it!

We had the Kirby Legend II at the time.
