I have to say I had no idea that the price of the Panasonic upright was so low. No wonder they were such a popular choice - terrific value for money when one looks at what was on offer.

I agree, Benny. Great value for money. They were real workhorses. My Mum's MC-E44 is still going, although it's retired now. But we had that in use for 17 years.

The price of the Panasonic's increased slightly when the full line up was expanded to include the 42 and 43. I believe the prices were £99, £109 and £119, but I'd need to double check that.

Just for refernece, £89.95 when adjusted for inflation is £215.64

It's a lot of money now, but when compared to the other cleaners it stands next to, it's staggering what one got for the price with the Panasonic. The fact that the Argos exclusive basic Hoover Turbopower is a whole £20 more and for a whole lot less in return is also testement to the Hoover brand reputation and it's "worth" back then too.

I love the old 600 series. Not the most reliable but i thought they were awesome. We got the 610 ans 612 first then the grey 614 and a green 616. I need to get these in my collection. They were made here locally in Cape Town at electrolux's manufacturing plant in Cape Town

It is fair to say that most of the problems with the 600 series cleaner were in the cleaning head. Although these cleaners looked super-modern at that time (the design being very similar to Hitachi and Hotpoint cleaners of the same era), I do think Electrolux would have been better off using one of their existing designs of cleaner when making their first range with on-boards tools.

It would have required some redesigning of course, but I think the Twin Turbo cleaner could have been adapted to take a set of fitted tools and would have been a "safer" bet. The design of the 600 was over complicated and used far too much plastic in the wrong areas.

We had two main problems here in Sa. First the base that broke. Second was the motor fans on the early models exploding and shredding. This was solved with a fan redesign.

@gsheen

there was a small crack in my chassis ( i think it was more from accidental user fault and or most likely age ) also that about the fan sounds scary

I was so upset when my mom came home with a Turbomaster and not a Blue Electrolux 612. I loved the Electrolux but the Turbo master was in reality the better purchase. The Electrolux only trumped it in Hose suction.
