I got this at the thrift store for $6 and all it really needed was a belt and the end caps needed clean. Feel free to share your opinions on this machine. I also forgot to mention was this unit smelled like Kerosene or Diesel after it being ran for 1 minute coming out the exhaust. I don't know if that's normal or a heat problem? You let me know.

Not a bad vacuum! Pretty simple. I have I think the same one or similar model but in blue. I think these might have been the very low end models.

Vacuums take on the odors of where they were stored, and the smell usually will latch onto the bag material, the cord rubber, or the motor windings - I guess they are porous to odors. If someone had it stored in a garage or a machine shop or who knows where with gasoline next to it maybe it sucked that smell into it.

I have a Rainbow vac that smells so badly of racing fuel I had to keep it in my garage until it is restored. It gave me a headache. I looked up the seller's address and it was a professional go-kart racing garage. Makes me wonder what in the world they used a Rainbow for in there. People do weird things with vacuums.

Nice score! Yeah, that's a no-frills vac, but it's a well-built cleaner with the time-proven Eureka F & G design. Looks to be in acceptable shape, too; a good candidate for a thorough clean and polish to restore its original luster and eradicate the offensive odor.

Out of curiosity, what is the cord's length? I know some of the budget models were equipped with 15-footers; the standard being 20-feet.

In case you are unaware, the 600-Series was comprised of both uprights and canisters for Kmart and some other large department stores.

I even located a 1989 Kmart ad featuring the model 630 (type not listed) along with other F & Gs - the mid-range 4.8-amp model 631 and top-range 6.5-amp ESP model 2118 - and other contemporaneous sellers.

Enjoy your newest vacuum cleaner acquisition and keep us posted on your reconditioning efforts of it.

Very nice!
I recently picked up a 2010, which looks similar, but in blue, and probably from the early 1970s.
I don't even know if mine runs yet, because I have things to do to it before I try firing it up. And, personal problems have had me putting a lot of stuff on a back burner.
Plus, I more recently got a free Kirby that I've been forcing myself to tinker with.
Congratulations! Seems like you got a great deal!

Thanks for posting that ad, Paul My mom had that Eureka ESP in the basement and sometime in the 2000's early, the motor blew up in a blue fireball and smoke, terrified me for several years of vacuums. We replaced it with a pumpkin orange JC Penney vac from the thrift store after it blew up and used that until that one died as well. Been on the hunt for both of those ever since.

Old Crankman - I was thinking you'd do a quick measure. I'm also curious if Kmart would have requested something in between such as 18-feet. No biggie.

Barry - You're welcome for the ad. Thanks for sharing your mom's F & G experiences; although sorry to hear about the blow-up & run-down. Hopefully she felt she'd gotten her money's worth in both situations. I wish you well in obtaining another.

Hey, Paul,

That was actually husky whose mom had the motor burn out.
My mom did have a blue Eureka, very similar to my 2010. But, she gave hers to a family friend. It was in perfect condition. That was before I started collecting. Otherwise, I may have claimed it myself.

The lower amp blender motors smelled like that after running for awhile and getting hot. You may need a new sleeve bearing housing for the top and/or grease the fan side bearing.

Those motors are kind of finicky.

Hey Barry,

Thanks for the clarification! I must have clicked on your profile by mistake.

Sorry, Huskyvacs. Not sure why I keep doing that to you (I think I did the same in the Household forum a month or so ago).
