Here we have a very poorly and sorry looking Turbopower U2194, I bought this for £5. This has and is an on going project, started back in December but thought I’d make a post.

This model is one of three other machines of the very first Turbopowers. Released in 1983 alongside the bottom of the line Turbopower Junior U1100 and another top of the line machine (I can’t remember its model number) these ran until I belive 1985, when they were replaced by the U2332 etc. Mine is the middle of the line and a rather special machine as in the original 1983 line up, the mk1’s, they featured colour matching bellows and bag door latch, however presumably for cost cutting, in 1984 Hoover switched from colour matching to plain black across all turbopower 1’s.

So I was very over joyed to find mine is an original line up with original colour matching bellows and bag door latch.
This girl needed a lot of work and quite literally bringing back from the dead, although not completely finished yet, I’d thought I’d share where I’m at so far. This machine features in burgundy and deep burgundy. It’s a firm favourite for me, I love the colour.

Before pictures followed by afters. Enjoy!

Very very dusty and lots of paint marks. And unfortunately a broken trunnion hence the severe lean (I knew this before I bought it)

Broken lower cord hook as is typical with these machines, although oddly the previous owner actually completely removed it. I also believe the cable isn’t original but it does have its cord grip.

Starting with removing the handle, bag, and bag door, picture of the information sticker that’s located inside the door as well as stripping down the handle. Usually, these plug bits that electrically connect the handle to the body have a tendency to work loose over time and arch, this one hasn’t done that.

An original genuine Hoover air freshener disc that has long since lost its smell. Didn’t realise these are rubber like first time finding one left in.

Next, remove the base plate brushroll and the very stretched belt. Also removed the carrier wheels. Although not pictured here, someone had been here before as they were placed upside down, explains why the height adjuster didn’t work.

Now we can remove the hood and oh boy…she dusty! It appeared to me that there is some plaster dust in here as well as the typical carbon dust and fine dust. Where the fan case clips on, it isn’t completely sealed so fine dust can and does escape.

With the hood removed, we have access to the trunion and can now remove the body of the machine. And there’s our culprit cause the lean. These machines can and do get fragile over time and are notorious for cracking. Rest of the body is now stripped down.

A long burnt out dirt finder bulb, wouldn’t surprise me if this was the original from the factory. Also, a horrible little rifa suppressor, these are notorious for going pop and smoking, especially in Electrolux’s.

Motor out, now the chassis can be stripped. It’s also the original brown chassis and original wheels, absolutely stoked about these as they can break. I also believe Hoover changed the chassis to black in around 1984 too.

Brushroll can now be stripped, nice and easy this time compared to the U2462! Also looks like something got trapped and made the brushroll hot and melted part of it.

This is not the original nor a genuine Brushroll as it isn’t stamped with a Hoover logo. These however would have also originally been black.

Now with the whole of the machine stripped I can start on the motor.

Bellows come off by snipping the cable tie and a gentle pull and twist. I don’t believe this motor has ever been serviced by the looks of it. Fan case also comes off, I swear it varies how many clips there are on these. We can also remove the fan now.

I would ideally replace this fan as it’s quite chipped/worn and it can and will cause excessive vibration and make the machine quite loud, but unfortunately these are proving hard to come by now so will have to do for now IMG_1689.jpeg

Top half pops off once screws are moved, revealing a very clogged cooling fan, this will also cause excessive vibration as well as over heat. Bearings need replacing as they’re all gunked up, field coil simply lifts off, these also vary between different models.

Bearings removed. Commy isn’t too bad but needs a bit of a clean. Also cleaned up the motor shaft as it was rusty…No one likes a rusty shaft.

While the parts dry, I start with cleaning the internal cord using a disinfectant wipe and soaking the brushroll bearings in white spirits to remove all the old grease and gunk then re greasing when dry.

I decided to try a bit of an experiment this time. I used thermal plastic to shape/make a new trunnion piece. I don’t know nor expect this to hold up but it’s worth a go.

Starting with adding new bearings then replacing assembling the motor. Also cleaned up the commutator as best I could.

I’m sure the piece where the bellows attach to are smaller in earlier models than later, but my mind could be playing tricks on me as it has been some year since I’ve work on a Turbopower IMG_1751.jpeg

Starting with reassembling the chassis now. I always add grease to the foot release peddle and wheel axles as they wear and scratch heavily over time so it’ll help remove some of that friction.IMG_1752.jpeg

At this point, I received help and advice from fellows collectors on here, so I continued with re assembly of the bodily while waiting on new carbon brushes. Left the motor in the chassis for safe keeping.

also a close up of the trunnion repair

I have fitted new carbon brushes today, but haven’t had chance to test it out, will update everyone once I have and hopefully a demonstration video will follow!

I’m super pleased with how this one has turned out, I still can’t get over the difference, I’m surprised I managed to bring back some shine.IMG_1806.jpegIMG_1807.jpeg
