1975-83 Electro-Hygiene 285 - Pictures?

I would like to know what a 1975-83 Electro-Hygiene 285 looks like, in pictures, please.

I would think the overall trim is grey, with a red bag (same cotton twill-type fabric as the model 777 bag) and red Adjust-O-Rite. Between 1975-81 the machine had a 3 amp motor; then it became 4.5 amps from April 1981.

Electro-Hygiene 285

That's right, Ben. I have both, a 285 made in 1979, and a 777 built in 1972, and they are almost identical except for the nozzle and light hood. The 777 has plain looking nozzle with the sheet metal hood, and the 285 has a little fancier nozzle with the cast hood. Both have gray trim and red bags just like you said.
Right now I don't have scanning capabilities, or I would post pics of both of them.

hygiene903 - Post-1983 Royals with Red Bags

Anyways, I can say that some post-1983 Royal uprights could easily be mistaken for the 777 and 285, such as the Heavy Duty Commercial Duke Series uprights from 1989-95 (for example: models 7600, 7700, 7800 and 7900) since those also use a red bag (but made of denim, rather than cotton twill or vinyl) and have grey trim and, of course, the red Adjust-O-Rite (on the 6.0-amp models 7600, 7620, 7800 and 7820, and the 7.0-amp models 7700, 7720, 7900 and 7920 only).

I'm sure you might like to find at least one of those (since both the 7620 and 7720 would most easily be mistaken for the 285, since they have both the same 14" wide nozzle and the step-up headlight).

We have an 890 that I picked up a few months back... not familiar with the brand, though.

Your 890 is an Electro-Hygiene sold between 1968 and 1972 (it was replaced by the 903 in 1973).

If you have a 1970 or older model, the nameplate would be affixed on the underside of the motor (example of stampings: Model 890, Serial 890-14851, Watts 350).

But if you have a model made since January 1971, then the nameplate would be affixed to the back side of the nozzle by the front wheels. Example of readings: Model 890, Serial 17A-A-12345 (where 17A is January 1971; 1 = year of decade; 7 = decade 1970s; A = January), Watts 400.

Post 1983 Royals

Actually Ben, I'm not really interested in any of the models you mentioned. For the biggest part, any Royal with a 4 (or more) digit model # is too new for my interest. I do have a 1028, but it was a gift, and actually the only heavy duty commercial (with 3-wire cord) Royal in my collection.
Ron, that's a nice 890 you have there. Give it a good polishing with Mother's Mag and it will be one beautiful machine! Looks like it is all original except for the bag. If the data plate is on the bottom of the motor it was built between 1968 and 1970.

1971 Royal 606

Jeff,

You also recently acquired a Royal 606 Heavy Duty Commercial dated March 1971. So that means you have two different Royal Commercial uprights (the 606 was said to be the very first one). However, the 1971 is obviously not as powerful as the 1028 (or even the 1987-95 models in the 660 and 670 series).

True, I do have a 606 built in 1971, but I would question if it is actually a true Heavy duty Commercial, as it does not have the 3-wire cord.

1975-83 285 on eBay

Here is a 1975-83 model 285 on eBay. From the pictures provided, the bag is similar to the 777, but the white cord is obviously a replacement for the original grey one, as are the front wheels maybe (since the rear wheels are narrow).
