I just found this wonderful television commercial for the beautiful Eureka Vanguard upright vacuum cleaner. This is a really early version because it still shows a tool port on the top of the hood in place of a "Rugulator" height adjuster that would debut in a few years' time. They don't even talk about a Vibra-Groomer brush roll yet. The focus of the advertisement is on the "box-top" top-fill Triple Filter "F & G" bag.

Had no idea that the sleek Vanguard hood that is still visible on Sanitaire uprights began way back in 1968! Such a cool piece of vacuum cleaner history! :-)

Cool, thanks for sharing the link! This must be the model 2080-A as the 1969 2080-B was equipped with the Rugulator.

Questions:

1 - What constituted the Vanguard trim?

2 - Were these all the Vanguard models?: 2080A/B, 2081A/B, 2082A, 2083A, 2084A, 2085A (2 versions - gold/white & blue/white)

2- Did the line last from 1968-1976?

I really think Eureka used the Vanguard name on only a few of the original “box-top” bag Cordaway models…maybe only on 270, 271 and the newer 2070 and 2080. This was from about 1967 to 1972. When they flattened the motor hood in the next series in 1973, they stopped using the Vanguard name.

The boxier Vanguard motor hood lives on until the present day in the classic Sanitaire chromed hood upright vacuums…..over 50 years later!

Thanks for that clarification, Brian.

Btw, I saw another thread featuring the model 271-B with a 3.5 amp motor, which is likely the one in the 1968 YT commercial due to its lack of 'Vanguard' on the cord reel case and the hose port instead of the Rugulator. In addition, I viewed a 1969 model 2080-A magazine ad showing the features.

I wonder if there was also a model 271-A with a 3.35 amp motor like other '60s models?

Some Vacuumland threads have taught me that indeed there was a Lagoon Blue version of the Vanguard before EW switched to the newer cream/beige colouring. That may have been the 270A.

It’s interesting that the 260 made it’s debut just before 1960, and the 270 arrived a few years before 1970.

Indeed. There's a wealth of information on Vacuumland.

Wait ... I thought the 2080-A was the first "Vanguard" due to having the Rugulator. Were the 270s also marketed with that moniker due to that hood style or because they had Cord-Aways?

1969 ad featuring the Model 2080-A Vanguard

It's interesting that "Vanguard" is only mentioned in small type in the ad.
