1.6 Kenmore Filters???

Greetings!

I have a great old 1.6 Kenmore canister (Sears model #346.2701680) which is a prize posession of my dear wife's.

Unfortunately, I did something "silly" while cleaning it, and totally ruined the filter. The wife isn't happy, and I can't find a replacement filter for this model number anywhere. So, now we're left with an ancient -screaming- Hoover S1049 ("Quiet Series") to do the bare floors. Yikes!

I've heard the filter for this particular unit was made for a number of similar vacuums: Anyone know what these might be?

Any help connecting with another filter here would be well appreciated...

If you could provide a picture of said vacuum cleaner , i might give ebay a look for you , or look in stores. I had a Kenmore evo bag less canister once so let me know .

That was made by Sanyo. There were a few different types of these made by them for Sears and a few were sold under Sanyo name. Perhaps a Sanyo vacuum filter would work if it's the same shape?

Sorry to have to say this, but I think your best solution to your filter dilemma is to sell the vacuum on Ebay, Craigslist or Kijiji as a parts machine & get rid of it. Unfortunately, Sanyo was bought by Panasonic in 2010 & slowly phased out most of their models & parts. This canister would be one of them & parts are NLA.

As for Mchmike's suggestion to try making a new filter, the problem with that is, as seen in the diagram above, the filter is encased in a plastic frame, with a screen covering it. It would be VERY difficult to find a glue that would hold air conditioner pleated filter media in place for a long period of time & it be a lasting repair. Further, the pleated filters that come in bagless vacuums are usually sprayed with a coating of some sort, perhaps Teflon or a plastic polymer of some sort, that makes the filter paper resistant to water, which makes it so you can wash & renew the filter when banging. Unless you can replicate that compound the filter is sprayed with at the factory, the air conditioner pleated filter media will clog very quickly after a few uses....remember, this pleated filter material was designed to be used in a air conditioner or furnace for 2 to 3 months, then thrown away & replaced, to be disposable. Also, in a vacuum cleaner, it is going to be exposed to A LOT more dust, & much more quickly, than if it was installed in a furnace or air conditioner. Even if you try vacuuming it off, that won't fully renew it's performance, & washing it will cause it to disintegrate, which means you have to glue another filter in place. That will get old quickly!

What I would suggest you do is get your wife this Panasonic canister to replace the Sanyo. It is very similar to the Sanyo....bagless with a pleated filter, straight suction with a long tube & attachments. There is also a Kenmore version of the vacuum, but it shows it as having a turbo brush, so the Panasonic might be better for you if you are using it for bare floors & attachment use.

It also might be a good idea to contact a few old-time vac shops in your area, & keep an eye on Ebay. You might eventually find a filter somewhere & put the Sanyo back into service.

Not the central air style material . The window unit material . It can be made slightly larger than the original piece and pressure can keep it in place . It can also be replaced as needed. ( eyes crossing and rolling )

Wow and thank you, everyone. Would've replied earlier, but the forum didn't let me know of any new posts!

I'll follow up on some of these ideas; and, considering everything, might even spring for a replacement unit of more recent vintage...

On that note, anyone have some good suggestions to look at? In addition to kirbylux77's possibility, durable, simple, quiet bagless canisters with cleanable filters would top the list ;o)
