Thanks Fred. I'm doing some searches now on the forum to see if there's a FAQ about fixing vacs. I'm pretty new to this! It sounds like what you're saying is that there's no say basic repair steps that are universal or apply to most or many vacs. I was wondering if it would be useful to come up...

Just wanted to 'bump' this thread and ask: has anyone ever greased the bearings on a vacuum before? How do you do it? I think my Kenmore has the same problem that vac_whisperer is talking about here. Thanks!

The happy green of your Hoover made me think that it might be lovely to color coordinate vacuums for every room of the house. Or is that getting excessive? (And is that a 50s wire shelf in the background?) kenkart, I've learned my lesson -- not only with vacuums but with everything!

That was my doing! We did buy the cord new from Kirby because originally we planned to use it. We still have the original gray cord, but it's got a little dry rot from age, so to help preserve it it's carefully rolled up separately.

Vintage will always be vintage, right? (And contemporary will always be contemporary?) In the words of _Wayne's World_, "We _fear_ change!" Love the colors!

Haha Brandon, yes that's it! Looks exactly like that. I'm still tempted to break it in and start using the attachments for things like demothing but I also want to keep it perfect. vac_whisperer, the avatar is me! Who is Betty Juarez?

Hey, this sounds exactly like my new Kenmore. I never greased bearings before but I'm willing to give it a try! What kind of grease do you use and how do you do it? Is there anything I want to avoid greasing that might ruin the machine?

Thanks for the info everybody! I probably won't hang the hose on a hook because I like to keep it in the box. But it's fun to play with because it reminds me of the Jetsons automatic robot vacuum! Should I ask for Singer bags when I stop into the vacuum shop? It doesn't say anything about a bag...

Here is my Saniway 'regret' story: saw one of these at a ReStore last summer that was shiny and in beautiful shape, and I passed on it only because it didn't have any attachments. But it was only $5! What a beautiful machine!

NOS unused 50s Kirby with all the attachments & everything, all the boxes, papers, packing material and so on. Plug it in once a year and unwind the cord etc. but otherwise it's a prop. I think it's going to end up in a museum!

It's all brand new inside ... and new filter pads, too! You sound so nice when you're running, when I turn you off there's a LOUD WHIRRING SOUND, like a jet landing ... what does this mean? Do you need oil? Servicing? Or is this "normal"?

Except ... most of your bags are for other models! We do have a few Kenmore canister bags here ... oh dear, are these going to be difficult to come by?
