Floor-a-matic... The separator based water filtration technology is superior to the baffle/pipe arrangements. The Rotho uses only a one quart reservoir. It could not be used in really dirty home to do a corrective deep cleaning. I have seen homes where the 4 qt Rainbow basin needed...

Tolivac... Today's vacuum cleaners are high, but short interval power consumers. If all of those high wattage vacs were replaced with vacs from the 50's the power savings in total would be significant. Thus G tech's claim about being able to shut down power plants.

Eurekastar... You are correct about the change in carpet construction. This is why the Sanitaire modification of drilling holes in the wall of the nozzle cavity is so effective. More air must be drawn laterally across the surface to compensate for the air that cannot be pulled through the carpet.

On Thursday I cleaned 1500 sq ft of light colored medium thick plush carpet with Host.  First I vacuumed with a Sanitaire S647D with two 5/32" holes drilled in the base, one on each side of the belt chamber. I started on height adjustment 4, and while I liked the sound and feel of the agitation...
