I use Dirt Devil Type-U bags with the Type-A fill tube and bellows on my old bottom fill Convertibles. The type-U bags are a good bit smaller than the Hoover type-A ones and fit nicely in the original outer bag.
I'll probably wind up spending the extra $30 or so dollars to get the PortaPower; the bags for it are cheaper and according to the schematics it has a dual-stage motor. I haven't able to find any info as to rather or not the one from the platinum collection is dual or single-stage. I'm guessing...
Aside from differences such as bag type and appearance etc, does anyone know if there is any difference in performance between the current Hoover Portapower as opposed to the one sold under the Platinum Collection?

It is indeed a 4-row brushroll. If I had to guess I'd say it probably performs at least as well as the Hoover one. It does a nice job of grooming the carpet too. I included a link to the cheapest I've been able to find it online. Hope that helps...
It's not a quiet vacuum but it's not unbearably loud, at least to me. I swapped out the original brushroll for a wooden CWP one which made it a bit smoother and quieter I think.
I just bought one of these the other day since reading on here that Hoover ceased production on them and can confirm it is indeed an attachment port. It didn't come with attachments however.
Could anyone here go about telling me how to remove the motor leads from the speed switch on a Convertible? I got a NOS two-speed high performance off of eBay that I'd like to install in my 719 and I've got no idea how to go about doing this.
It sounds like what you're seeing is normal though. The area where the brushes come into contact with the armature will have a black/brownish film which acts as both a dry lubricant/conductor to reduce sparking. Can you post a pic though?
This machine has the lightweight upside down ESP motor so the procedure for assembling/dissasembling is somewhat different. This generally is not a long lasting motor when compared to the pancake or blender motors so ESPs like this are somewhat hard to come by. I found a link to a blow up...
First you need a torx driver to remove the dial-a-nap knob. Once you've done that, remove the two screws holding the hood that are on the underside of the machine and the hood will come right off.
If it doesn't need much in the way of parts then I'd say go for it as you can get a new one for $100 or so. It's not a very loud machine at all I don't think.
I generally prefer the VibraGroomer II but I do have that brushroll in one of my Eureka ESPs and it does a really good job on plush carpet. It's a bit quieter/smoother than a VG II as well. If you want, you can upgrade it's performance a bit more by swapping out those generic black brush strips...
