I found this the other day at a thrift shop and wondered what it was :

I did some research and found this explanation :
Electrolux Vacuum cleaners were often sold door-to-door. The salesman would drop off a small plastic bank (with your contract) and stop by weekly to collect the quarters you had saved up. Quarters can be inserted in the slot in the bottom. I put one in, and needed to slide something in the slot to remove it, as it seems to lock once a quarter is inserted. (I guess the Electrolux guy would do that.) The piece is in very good vintage condition, and is 6 inches long.
