About a month ago I purchased a less than 10 year old Zanussi frost-free fridge freezer (50:50 ratio) and it appeared to work fine, until one day the temperature warning beeper went off to alert me the fridge was above the maximum temperature.

Strangely though, the freezer was still working fine and continued to do so until I used up what was left in it and then turned the whole thing off for 24 hours.

Upon turning it back on, everything worked as normal, until a couple of weeks later when the exact same thing happened again!

My question is, what is the underlying issue for the fridge warming up but the freezer remaining cool?

There is frost developing in the vent in the freezer compartment so I know that that is the issue, but WHY is it happening?

Check the defrost timer, frost will build up on the evaporator coil till air flow to the lower section (non frozen) part is cut off. The timer is usually located near the bottom near the compressor. The next most likely culprit would be the heating coil that warms the evaporator, but not as likely as the timer.

There is a cooling fan that blows cold air from the freezer to the fidge. Your thermostat that controls this function may have stopped working or the drain pipe might be clogged

The cooling fan then freezes up and stops working.

Empty the whole thing and move it outside into the sun and leave it their for a day or so, at the back of the freezer will be a plate that can be removed. If you remove it you will see the fan and a radiator. Plug the fidge in and see if the fan switches on when you close both door sensors. If it does then close all up and check the fridge in 20 minutes, if it is cold you may have just had to much icebuildup. I had the same problem with my frost free LG. However a month later my one started to do it again so I repeted the process and then decided to check the drain pipe , tru as bob it had clogged with ice so some hot water got it sorted out and so far 6 months later its still working fine.

Out of interest the Fridge repair man quoted me R £ 250.00 to fix the fridge but he didn't have the parts ( new fan and sensor ) at the time and neither did LG so I decided to have a look, Glad I did they were just iced up
