I really like this ad for today 10-5-06. What year is it? Can someone tell me? I realize the 30 was made for several years.

I have to admit that the Christmas ads are my favorite ads for the vacuums. Whem my collection is set up, as it will be soon in my new place. I like to have ads all over my walls in my vac room. A couple in particular that I have and I am sure most of you have seen, is the Filter Queen Christmas ad that says the poem "Twas the night before Christmas" with adding a few twists with the vacuum. The other one I like is Hoover Christmas one which I think is the 28, but I am not sure, where you see a portion of the Christmas tree and the lights on the tree, and the lights are the older tree lights C6, which that is the other thing that I love to collect is antique Christmas decorations, which some of you already know.
If any of you have other Christmas ads and may have a copy to share please let me know.

Another question I have is what years did Kirby actually put ads in magazines? I only saw one in an older Life magazine and it was just the emblim for 562 I think, the frist tan Kirby. I remember the emblim was tan.

If I am not mistaken wasn't Petty Coat Junction and Green Achers related? Or in the same area? The reason I am asking, is beacue they seem to have used the same Kirby vacuum in both shows. Does anyone else remember this?

What a great memory you have. I seem to remember scenes of either a Kirby or Royal vacuum in both of those shows.

I have seen ads for Kirby, but most of them only show the door to door salesman and not the actual machine. Of course the Kirby logo.

Now to watch the reruns of Petty Coat and Green Acres...

A Short History of Nonsense.

In the early sixties, CBS producer Paul Henning proposed a show about "Appalachians" that struck it rich. That show became "The Beverly Hillbillies" and became TV history. The Clampetts came from a fictional town in "the hills"(no state mentioned) called "Bugtussel". Bugtussel was next to "Pixley" which borded on "Hooterville". Hooterville became the site of its first spin-off, "Petticoat Junction" which featured Paul Henning's daughter and soon-to-be Son-in-Law Linda Henning and Mike Minor. Petticoat Junction also starred the late, great Bea Benaderette, who, although most people don't know her name, was one of Warner Brothers' favorite female voices for Bugs Bunny cartoons(she was the perfect Bobby-Socksing "Little Red Riding Hood" in Michael Maltese's brilliant and sadistic "Little Red Riding Hare"). Petticoat Junction begat "Green Acres", TV's first LSD-inspired prime-time sitcom.

Yes you are right Morgan, I had forgotten til you mentioned that ad also had a man who you assumed was the door to door salesman.

Wow, thank you l'aspirateur, I did not realize but now can see this, that Beverly Hillbillies were related as well.
 
POD 10/5, and TV Sweeper Sightings

This is one of my favorite XXX photos, too. And believe it or not, it came from an post-WWII industrial engineering magazine, and the ad was placed by the steel industry! It was advertising the renewed use of steel products after the war. The rest of the ad is insignificant which is why I just cropped this photo from it.

The only TV show that I clearly remember seeing an XXX in was "My Three Sons." Charlie, the gruff old housekeeper, used it once in a while. A short list of others that I remember:

Old vacs in TV shows

Boy i must be showing my age, because I too remember all the old shows Charles Richard said had Vacs on them, and lets not forget the wonderful Donna Reed show... she used a roll easy! my favorite was Petticoat Junction with Kate Bradley though.

Now for the questions:
What make of vacuum did Abbott & Costello sell in the movie,"Little Giant?" It looks like a Royal tank to me.
What make of vacuum does Michael Parks sell int the movie "Bus Riley's Back in Town?" I'm thinking it looked like a Kenmore Torpedo Tank, but I'm not sure. And does anyone remember an episode of "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." where a Vacuum shop is a "front" for one of "Thrush's" installations, and arms, ammo, money, etc. were transported in the vacuums?
And although June Cleaver may have used a Hoover 63 in some episodes of "Leave It To Beaver," I seem to remember seeing a GE Swiveltop more frequently.

Another "retro" movie with an old vac sighting is the late 1980s film "Great Balls of Fire" about Jerry Lee Lewis. When he marries his cousin (14 yrs old I think...?!), he carries her over the threshhold of their new house and into the living room which is filled with boxes of stuff and new appliances, including a G.E. Roll Easy!

Anyone remember a VERY short-lived show on Nickleodeon called "Hi Honey, I'm Home?" It had a neat premise - a 50s family from tv is projected into modern time and has to cope with life in the 1990s. It only lasted 5-6 episodes. There were lots of cool appliances on the show - the housewife's kitchen was all turquoise, and she used a G.E. Roll Easy!
 
Alec Guiness as vacuum cleaner salesman and secret agent

Last week I caught the last half of "Our Man in Havana" on Turner Classic Movies (see link for info) in which Alec Guiness plays a vacuum cleaner salesman/secret agent in Havana, Cuba. A very funny movie with lots of scenes of new Hoovers of the time (1960). I haven't seen this film in a logn time and I wish I had been alert enough to set the DVR to record the whole thing. Unfortunately it isn't currently out on DVD in the US. Hopefully TCM will run it again soon!

Wow this has been cool...

I appreciate again all the kind things and yes this has been fun. A couple of other things I remember is on a recent movie ( within the last 15-20 years), was a movie about a hungarian couple who moved to the US and become citizens who had a child who moved here a little later becuase they could not bring her with them when they first came. I am not sure of the name of that movie at the moment or who all stared in it. But, the hustband when he first moved to US sold vacuums door to door but sadly they put the wrong area of vacuum in this shot he was selling Hoover uprights and I believe it was a 700 which I didnt think was sold door to door. Then later in the movie it was the early 60's and they had an Electrolux I am not sure of the model but you will all tell me, it was the green/terquois. Yes they did turn it on and yes it was running but they bearings were really bad, I mean horrible.

The last thing was the movie "Avilon" if anyone remembers and I think it was Billy Lipmans vacuums that were in that movie, at least I think they were...

Yes I do hope someone will put these all in our news letter, this would be a great article..

No, I don't think that was a Lux 30 in Little Giant--one thing I remember for sure is that the vac they used had wheels, not runners, so the jury's still out on that one. I happened to remember a couple more though.
There was a show in the 60's called "Please Don't Eat The Daisies" that used a Hoover 28.
"The Wonder Years"-Lux 30
Now I'll ask you--does anyone remember what vacuums were used in the show "Hazel" (starring Shirley Booth) or "Bachelor Father" (starring John Forsythe)? Especially "Hazel," because seeing how she was a maid, you know she had to be vacuuming from time to time. Also, does anyone remember a Hoover 28 (or maybe a 27 or 305) being used in an episode of "The Fugitive?"
As for the "Beverly Hillbillies/Petticoat Junction" connection, these were two of my favorite shows back in the day, and I would like to make a correction if I may, as I used to be (key phrase "used to be") somewhat of a conniseur of these two shows. The connection of these shows was not geographical, as Bugtussle was somewhere in the Ozarks (supposedly the nearest town of any significance was Silver Dollar City, MO), and Hooterville was supposedly somewhere in Ohio, as Mr. Douglas (Eddie Albert) in one episode of Green Acres told someone on the phone, "...I bought a farm ### miles from Ripley, Ohio near a town called Hooterville..." The connection, rather, was people--Aunt Pearl from the Beverly Hillbillies (Jed's sister-in-law, I think) had a cousin named Kate Bradley who looked just like her (both played by Bea Benaderette) who invited them all to her Shady Rest Hotel in Hooterville for a visit, thus creating Petticoat Junction. Then several years later a lawyer named Oliver Wendell Douglass moved there from New York with his wife, creating Green Acres.
Anyway, this is fun--can't wait to see what other vacuums have been on TV!!

Movies

Another movie comes to mind. "Come Blow Your Horn." Mom is seen holding a Hoover Pixie in the last fifteem minutes of the film.

And how about "Good Neighbor Sam" where the handle of a giant upright vacuum cleaner is used as a pariscope?
 
Does anyone remember??????

I watched a movie once on AMC about a very wealthy family that owned a vacuum cleaner company. The vacuum had the family's last name. Someone kidnaps the child and wants a huge payoff. I saw this a long time ago, but can't remember the name of it. The vacuum used in the movie had a special feature. You could lift up a door above the brushroll and clean out the hair and strings without turning the vacuum over. It was a movie from the 1950's. Maybe someone else has seen this. Tim

Little Giant

Just got out my copy, the vacuum was a Cadillac tank. Which is ironic, because on the old Abbott and Costello show (not the movie) they used a Lux model 12, Swedish Version, repainted.

In the movie Poltergeist II, the father moves to California and gets a job selling Electrolux. He had the "heavy duty" upright all apart in the living room, trying to figure out the attachment set-up.

Brady Bunch movie used a Lux model L (blue), while the T.V. show used several different machines. Most noteable is the Lux XXX used in the episode where Alice is sick and the kids to the housework, and oversuds the washer. Bobby is using the Lux to suck up the suds.
 
Just remembered another one. In a Jerry Lewis movie, I think it was "Cinderfella," there is a scene that takes place in a department store. Can't remember if Jerry's character is working in the store or a customer, but he turns on a Hoover (think it was either a 63 or a Convertible) and fumbles around and can't get it to shut off. The bag inflates to an enormous size, and he floats up into the air with it, like a balloon, until someone grabs a gun from the nearby sporting goods department and blasts the bag to get him down.
Still lots of fun seeing all of these everyone is coming up with. Hope someone compiles a list!

Jerry Lewis movie

"Who's Minding the Store" -- released in 1963.

It's a FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABULOUS film for Hoover nuts, even those who loathe Jerry Lewis! There are many many shots of not just Hoover vacuums but other appliances on display in the large department store where he works and falls in love with a young lady who works in the store.

[Note to those who have seen it - please don't be a plot spoiler for those who have not!!]

And there's an incredible -- HILARIOUS -- scene at the end where a Hoover 63 runs amok!!

Also starring Agnes Morehead (as the girl's socialite snob mother), Jill St. John (as the girl), and Ray Walston (as the girl's father).

This film is a MUST SEE if you haven't seen it!!
 
Anyone remember the modified Kirby Classic nicknamed "Jaws" in the movie MR. Mom starring Michael Keaton? The vacuum ends up taking over the household,tearing down drapes, momentarily chasing the children around the home until it finally gets ahold of one of the kids blankets and Michael Keaton runs in and attacks the vacuum busting it's bag, blowing dust everywhere... then later in the film, the vacuum "walks" up to him and he instructs it to go clean the kids room, threatening it with a screwdriver in one hand... as if he has it trained like a pet..

Charles that would be great I would love to see that movie as well, but has anyone one see tne Laurel and Hardy movie with the vacuums in the store they were managing that day?

And yes thunderhexed I sure have and remember that well, it was to funny how they got that Kirby all mixed up with all kinds of parts from differnt vacuums.

By they way in someones collection doese anyone have a GE commercial? I used one many years ago in a hair salon in Florida, the guy who owned the store let me vacuum his store at the end of the day. I was with friends there who used the guy as her hair stylist. Anyway, the vacuum was different it had to two handles on it like a polisher and it would moved on its own if you didnt keep it in control like a polisher. I have not seen one like this sense.

The movie

I sure wish I could find the name of this old movie. I remember watching it about 20 years ago on AMC. I just can't remember the name of it or who played in it. Please someone tell me I'm not going crazy. Am I the only one who has seen this? I have searched for it using Google and Amazon. I can't find any results.

It was just a movie about a father who invented a vacuum cleaner. He passed the company on to his two sons. They were very wealthy. One of the children is kidnapped and held for ransom. The vacuum cleaner was just an undertone in the movie. The movie was more about their daily lives and circumstances. Although, there were a few good shots of the vacuums. The name of the vacuum was the same as the family's name. I hope it doesn't seem I'm going on and on about this. Tim
