Hi folks. I'm new to this site as a poster, but I've been lurking in Vacuumland for awhile now.
My partner is conducting an estate sale in which time seemingly stood still after 1963. Nothing in the house, not even the wallpaper, was changed. He called me to tell me he had something that would make me gasp. It did. New, in-the-box, and not used once. Even had the wax paper cover on the dust cup. Drum roll, please?

Wow-O-Rama!!! Gasp-O-Licious!!!

What a thrill, Dan.
Swoon & drool,
Dave

I see the checked mylar decorative insert is lifting around the edge from the Magic Disc - it's only perishing rubber cement and can be re-affixed with a fresh coat of rubber contact cement. I have the same model D-3 MagicDisc, in the same virtually unused condition and has the same piece of bandage tape on the handle socket. I think Compact must have put it there for packing protection against transit scuffs.

yep

I noticed that as well, and knew it was contact cement failure. You have good eyes. And yes, the tape was on the disk for that purpose. There was another one at the top of the machine itself to prevent the box from rubbing the finish. The disk still has the wooden plug in it to attach a mop handle, in the event the user preferred to use that instead of the steel wands.

Wow Dan, what a great find!! I noticed it has an outlet for a power nozzle, did one come with it as well? It is amazing at the things that are still out there. Wouldn't you love to know the whole story on this machine and why it was never used? Congratulations!!!

The exhaust port lid and the early friction fit wands with the knurled turn-knobby coupling predating the button latch and hole or slot in the tools! This boxed version comfirms for we Compacters what came with which model. This one must have been one of the last off the line, with that powernozzle socket and the later Magic Disc. Imagine, no fingerprints and the hypnotic virgin gleam of those wands...

Super!

Folks, We need to find an Interstate Always Beauty Clean power nozzle for Dan's C-5. Can only wish someone has an extra one. :-)

No power nozzle

There was no power nozzle, and no evidence in the house that there was one.
The owner's mother had run a rooming house, and we found a number of things that were still in original packaging, such as bath towels, clothing, etc. I know when my paternal grandparents celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1968, they refused to take a lot of gifts out of the packaging and use them, because they were 'too nice'. Having been thru the depression, they used things until they were completely unusable. When they passed away in 1979, we found box after box of 1968-era things, unopened. My guess is that when the old lady at this house died some years ago, her son, who continued to live there, simply left everything as she had. Perhaps one of the roomers had been a vac salesman and sold or presented her with it- who knows? At any rate, I did find a kenmore canister nearly unused as well, and a Premier upright, which I also bought. It still had the original bag.
You'd be surprised at the vacs I've passed up when Robert has done an estate sale. Hindsight is 20/20, it seems...

Show you my HOSE? But sir, we've hardly met!!!

Hehehehe...
OK, here it is. I don't intend to flex it much, as it seems stiff and I don't know if the rubber inside might fracture.

WOW, Great Find!!
NOS and never used, amazing.
If I remember correctly, it cost about $300 which at that time was an absolute fortune.
Amazing that they never used it.

My folks bought that exact same machine in '62/'63.
I was in kindergarten but still vividly remember the demonstration.
It was a Saturday morning and I sat right between my mom and dad on the couch while the saleman did his presentation.
All his "other machine" comparisons were to the Hoover Convertible which I was very fond of at the time ... it created a little conflict in my brain.
They bought the machine and we started cleaning with it as soon as the salesman left.
I was on cloud nine.
Very fond memory.
Enjoy your great find.
