Woven Vacuum Hose Repair

Hi everyone! I am going to try a repair that I hope will work. I want to try Flex Seal especially since they came out with clear. I had originally sprayed a whole can into an leaky Electrolux woven hose that I use on my xxl I use in my shop. I just sprayed the liquid till it came out the end. Not a very efficient process, but it worked for a good amount of time. My guess is the material eroded away over time or there was an incomplete seal inside.

What I want to try is spraying the seal on the outside where I can completely control the application. Rustoleum has a similar product.

I will let you all know how that works out.

In the meantime, please let me know your ideas/opinions as to the aesthetics, practicality and durability of sealing the outside of the hose.

The other idea is to decant the liquid from the spray can and slosh the liquid around inside the hose.

*might help to use a cheap junk disposable vacuum, with a variable speed on low, to run while applying the spray. Also to plug the other end of the hose lightly. My thought is to provide a vacuum to lightly suck the spray into the fibers.

Latex

Charles Richard Lester came up with the idea of pouring costume latex into cloth hoses. I believe if you use the Super-search-alator you could find his old thread explaining how.

Funny thing ... I had never heard of Flex Seal until the other night when one of those late-night "As Seen On TV" commercials came on for the product. I wondered if anyone had tried it on vacuum cleaner hoses and was gonna ask about it.


 


I went to Lowe's the other day and bought some liquid Plasti-Dip to give it a test run. They also had it in a spray can in clear. I wondered how that would work on the outside of woven cloth & vinyl hoses but didn't get any. It seems like it would ruin the surface.


 


The latex treatment does work but it's tricky to do. I haven't done any more in a while. This weekend I'm going to give the Plasti-Dip a whirl...

Plasti-Dip

I just tried this Plasti-Dip on one of my hoses. I sprayed it in and shook it around and rolled it to coat the sides and I hung it up for a few minutes and I saw it dripping out, so I started rolling it again and shaking it. It is really a runny substance. I have it laying on the garage floor to dry. When I touched the hose after spraying it, it was cold so I knew I got it throughout the hose. We shall see how this works when I test it tomorrow. I believe it should be dry by then.

Let us know how that works out. I have still not tried my experiment because I got distracted by an acquisition of a Royal Power Tank. I had been wanting one of these for some time.

Plasti-Dip in Hose

I tested the hose this afternoon and seemed to work fine. It is still flexible. I guess the only trick is to make sure you get it on the sides of the entire length of the hose.

Cool. Imagine a spray head extension plugged at the end, with tiny holes around the sides a inch or so from the end, that could be lowered through the hose, and pulled slowly up the hose while spraying the liquid. Could work.

Fixed Hose

Here is the hose I fixed with the Plasti-Dip. It goes great with the LX. The suction is great now.

maybe, adapt an engine cleaning wand? They are long, not as long as a hose, but something could be done.

What one of the Entrepreneurs here needs to do is develop a system for refurbishing and fixing these woven hoses and then market the idea.  I bet there is a lot of need, not just us collectors; but the general repair side as well. 


 


It would, of course, have to be cost effective over the purchase of a replacement hose.  Shhh--don't tell the replacement hose people I said this.


 


I was thinking something along the way of the entrepreneur that designed the flex hose water hose.  Maybe some means of inserting a bladder or liner inside the existing hose and sealing it to the ends.

Sven, you are on the right track alright, the wand would not have to be the entire length of the hose, just half way. So it would be put in from each end.

You are right, Harley. Someone should come up with a solution, but if it is me, I would share it with the group.
