HI, i found these pics from a picture archive site for Wichita History. One of which is a appliance Shop that was once on the south side. That shows a Vacuum in the from display window. I'm also posting a few others just for fun. Enjoy!

Those were the days....

Very cool pics Jae...reminds me of my hometown's downtown back when I was a kid. We had two major department stores, one had five floors, the other seven. Oddly enough, the vacuums were on the top floors in each. Mom always knew where to find me! The old "downtowns" with their department, furniture, shoe, sporting goods, "dime stores", etc., were loaded with charm, and at Christmas time, it was worth the time to drive downtown at night to view all the stores decorations, especially the ones that were animated. Sad, those days are gone.

DT wichita looks NOTHING like that anymore.....

All the awnings in the sidewalk are gone, and the beautiful median in the middle of the road is gone....and downtown ITC has gotten really run down....when i first saw those pics i couldn't believe it!!! i would have thought that was another city.....but since i walk DT frequently and know the basic layout, i knew it was.....

Great old pics of Wichita. I can actually remember downtown when it was something other than a place for the homeless to pee.

Honestly things started to go in the crapper when Macy's left in the early 80s. Which btw coincided with the opening of Towne East Mall.

My mother's favorite thing to do was window shop after dinner. You could walk there then with no fear of being shot. I remember the Christmas lights, the sunken garden at Kennedy Plaza.
thanks for the memories.

Those were the days.
PS my other favorites are the Frank Loyd Wright houses/buildings.

I love what I see in all of those photos, especially that really neat median and the ballroom!

Mid Century modern paved the way for what we see today, but IMO Mid Century modern is still my favorite kind of modern!

If you look...

To the left of the Hotpoint store in the first picture you will see a Frigidaire emblem, I bet that made for some fancy sales talk!

Frigidaire/Hotpoint Rivalry:

"I bet that made for some fancy sales talk!"

I bet it also made for some extremely polite salesmen, too.

The slightest customer irritation, and you could literally watch your sale walk out your door - and into someone else's.

Wow! Thanks for sharing those pics Jae! I love looking back to see how things once were. Reminds me of old pics of downtown Salina back in the day. So much more substance and style than now. And my what a grand place the Cotillion once was. And I really love that median.

Harley you mentioned the sunken gardens at Kennedy Plaza. Are they still there? I haven't heard of them. Where would that be or have been located? I also would like to see the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings sometime as well. I have driven past the house, but I wonder are there tours?

RE Frigidaire/Hotpoint..

Of course Frigidaire was a higher priced product as a rule..

The sunken gardens at Kennedy Plaza: The building is still there, just East of century II, I don't think they decorate the patio any longer, I think the gardens disappeared around 1975 or so.

The Loyd-Wright houses are sometimes on the historical tour, also the Corbin Education Center at WSU is a Wright design given go a Saudi Prince and then gifted to WSU. In fact I think if I remember WSU is in control of the Riverside house as well.

Thanks for the info & links Harley. I stumbled upon the Allen Lambe house driving around in the past. Very neat! Hope to take a tour some day. I had in mind that there was a FLW house over toward the Riverside area as well. But I guess I was mistaken. I can't find anything about another online. I wasn't aware of the building on the WSU campus, another to add to my list to check out sometime.
