Has anyone ever heard of the Winton Junior cylinder vac? Its something i had forgotten about till now, a vac someone gave my grandad in the early 70s. It was a small cylinder clad in blue leatherette with simple matching chrome end caps. All that came with it was the very skinny hose black and tan striped cloth and 1 extension tube narrower than average. The detachable cord connecter pushed in the top. The handle and sleighs were missing too. My dad and myself went to our local vac repair shop and managed to get it A replacement cord connector, another narrow extension tube and a floor brush, as grandad only had hard floors. It was a good little machine and we used it for years. I would says cheap 1920s/30s vacuum myself. It had an earth i do remember that! via a brass strip on the connecter onto the case. Ring any bells with anyone

Hi Si:

That sounds like one of the machines made by Phoenix Mfg in England. They produced basically the same machine through the 40's 50's and possibly even part of the 60's if memory serves me correctly. They were made under many different names (depending on which store was ordering them). I have 3 different ones under the names Easy Torwin and Whirlwind.

This is the Whirlwind

Hi Doug
Cheers for that yes that fits! That was the machine same colour as the top 1!! The hose just pushed in, either end would fit both ports, very simple, but good suction, lux style cloth shake out bag. No filter i dont think. Doug you always answer my questions and are always very helpful, thank you mate. Its nice to see the proper tool set as i never did like i said although Dad and i did make a set up for it. I do remember the hose and tubes were narrower than lux yes? Also i remember my cousin was given a similar machine in 73 on his wedding , a then very old red Phoenix, and a nieghbour had 1 labelled Mercury yes? Wonderful to hear from you doug
God bless

Hi Si:

Good to hear from you too.

Yep - I believe they use a 1" diameter connection (as did alot of machines at the time - like president/bylock, vactric, ruton, and the ones by Siroma Engineering)where as the Electrolux and most of the others used 1.25". As well some like the old hoovers and the GE's used 1.5"

Another interesting thing about these machines. The hose was actually metal - covered with cloth and lined with rubber.

I try to answer what I can. I think I've got a bit more information about the European machines than most as they were sold in Canada as well but very little in the US.
