Yesterday while I was in Target I just had the urge to buy a new vacuum. So I went home with the Hoover Windtunnel Bagless Rewind Upright. The cord rewind feature really appealed to me, like my Electrolux. However, when I looked underneath the nozzle I was disappointed to learn that it’s not really a Windtunnel. There are no individual channels like my aunt’s older model. In hindsight I should have just bought a refurbished model off of Ebay.

Why does Hoover still call this model a Windtunnel if there are no individual channels in the nozzle?
 
What's in a name

TTI owns the rights to the "Windtunnel" branding. Although not technically built like the older Windtunnel vacuum cleaners, it is branded with Windtunnel. Over the last 15 years or so, Hoover Windtunnel is an easily recognizable and highly profitable name. The branding of vacuum cleaners is where the money is- just like when Eureka bought the Electrolux name and started creating these little Oxygen vacuum cleaners. Although they are not true Electroluxes- they are branded with a name that was purchased.

After I had already posted. I thought that it might be marketing. Wish I would have thought about this before I bought it. It's not a bad vacuum, but I really wanted a true Windtunnel. I don't know if Target will let me take it back or not.

Kenny, I am sure that will your sales receipt and the box it came in that they will. At least I would hope they would.

Let us know what happens if you try to return it. I hope they would take it back, but Target can be tough with returns.

Yes I have the sales receipt and box. They should take it back. Hopefully it won't be a big problem. I would rather get something that I really wanted.

I suppose if Target gives you a hard time about the return, you could point out that there may be a bit of false labeling on the machine, claiming it's a Wind Tunnel when it doesn't actually contain the technology that established the Wind Tunnel name in the first place.
 
I was going to echo what Sudsmaster said about the false advertising. I wonder of the new Platinum series has the Windtunnel agitator cavity? Kenny, I'm sorry that you were disappointed by this, but thanks for sharing the info with the rest of us. It's good to know! Did you get a T series machine, or was it something different?

Hope you find something you like better... Of course I'd recommend the bagged S/P original W/T, but I know they are quirky and not everyone likes them.

We went to this vac dealer during the convention this year..really nice people and have been around for a long time. Their prices on Hoover factory serviced as well as new vacs are very reasonable...apparently Hoover is having issues with the models with cordwinders. A friend/vac shop owner is an authorized Hoover warranty center, and got a whole box full of new cordwinders to repair people's machines. One day, a woman brought her new T-series into his shop, and the cordwinder malfunctioned the first time she used it, and of course was a Target store purchase I believe. Well, she walked out with a new Riccar, and was going to take the Hoover back. The original Windtunnel design is my favorite clean air machine, and IMHO, the best cleaner they made since the Concept. Too bad consumers aren't better informed.

Recall

Yes, they recalled the cord winder on certain models. TTI was wonderful about getting the winders out to all warranty centers in a very timely fashion. It is a wonderful relationship because not only do we get a lot of new vacuum cleaner sales (we run a $100 trade in special on protected brands); but TTI has a nice reimbursement on the warranty labor.

Sorry to hear about your fake WindTunnel. I recently bought a great Hoover Tempo Widepath upright and it does indeed have the patented WindTunnel channels in the agitator cavity. It really DOES make a difference in dirt pick up!

Just FYI.....You have the story about Eureka backwards. In the 1970's, Electrolux of Sweden bought The Eureka Company, and at the time acquired the right to put the Eureka name on their vacs, not the other way around. Since the 1970's, the company has sold many vacs branded with the Eureka name, but actually made in Europe by Electrolux, or Volta, or Progress or any one of their many vacuum subsidiaries.

Windtunnel update

Target took the so called “Windtunnel” back with no questions asked. After meeting with a friend I went to Sears to check out their vacuum selection. The saleswomen let me try out a few. I narrowed my choices down to a Hoover Windtunnel that they had on display (the light blue with the channels in the agitator cavity) or the $179.00 Kenmore canister. The Hoover display model, which I tried out was the older model (the one I wanted) but they only had the newer Windtunnel T-series bagged in stock. Sears did not bother to update their display to the newer T-series bagged. When I asked the saleswomen she said they only had the newer version in stock.

My guess is that Hoover is phasing out the older Windtunnel’s in favor of the new T-series. Personally I do not like the new T-series because it does not have the channels in the agitator cavity. I’m sure the Tempo still has them, because it is not part of the new series. The T-series also feels cheaper in build quality around the handle area. The bagless machines are just in a different category altogether.

I was determined that I was going to buy a new vacuum yesterday so I went home with the orange Kenmore Canister. It has way more suction power than my 1205 and L’s. But I have already had an issue with the height/handle release on the PowerMate. Just had to pop the release back in. The canister is fairly quiet as well as the PowerMate. I’m about 6’3 and the wands are too short for me, but that is really only the major issue. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the Kenmore. But I’m still keeping me eye out for a newer Electrolux in the future. The Kenmore should keep me satisfied for a year or so.

Yes, I know Riccar is wonderful and I would high recommend it since they are made in Missouri. But I wanted something within my price range and I wanted to pick up something local.

I haven't seen the Hoover Tempo in any department stores. I must be missing something. Not sure if my local vac shop will have one or not.
 
Can you post a picture of your new Kenmore? I am curious if it is the one I almost got a few months ago when I took my Platinum Bagged back
