Windows 10??

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

I'm not surprised at all! I would like to try it once the issues are worked out though, as although I stick with old operating systems until they are practically extinct (I still use XP on my laptop and Vista on my desktop!) I'm a computer geek too and like to test out new releases.

My home pc runs xp, not online any longer, save it for mom to play games on. Laptop runs windows 7, updates for sure, but was pretty happy with it.

So I've been playing around with Win 10 for a few days now and I generally like it--at least as much as I can stand to like Windows. That said, there are a couple of minor annoyances (typical Micro$oft ploys, really) that one needs to fix:

• Edge is automatically set as the default Web browser. If you have been an IE user, this isn't a problem, but for the rest of us who use alternative browsers like Chrome or Firefox, it's an issue. You have to go into "Settings" (formerly known as the Control Panel) and select your desired browser. At a glance, it will seem that Edge is the only choice, but the menu will expand to reveal the other choices when you click the Edge icon.

• Privacy is compromised by default. Unless you want the folks at Redmond snooping around on your computer at will, you need to make some adjustments to your privacy settings.

You can either fix these things by going into the settings as you go through the set-up process or you can accept the defaults and fix them later. Oh well, at least they can be easily fixed.

Human, I found the same issues. It does seem quicker and video playback seems much improved. Me and Cortana still aren't the happy couple I thought we would be.

Glad to hear it is overall a good OS and with all the necessary updates and possibly a service pack, it could be a highly rated system.

I would be looking to purchase a brand new laptop computer either at the end of this year or the start of next, so if all the issues are ironed out and I can find a good deal I may well be a Win10 user in the not too distant future.

It will take a lot to get me away from XP though, I still use it on a daily basis (even though it is no longer safe to do so) and to this day have no issues with it.  Neither would I with Win2k either if I still had a working PC with that installed.

You really won't have a choice...

The way Micro$oft operates, you won't have a choice of operating systems within the next few months. Now that Win 10 is out, they will stop--and may already have done so--making Win 8 available to OEMs. Once the existing stock is out of the supply chain, that will be it. Win 10 will be the only game in town unless you want a Mac or a Linux box. Even if you do buy a new computer with Win 8 installed, you would do well to upgrade to Win 10 because coming from XP, it will be less of a shock to the system to go directly to Win 10 with its more familiar user interface. I would also dare say support for Win 8 will be short lived once the free Win 10 upgrade period ends in a year. My guess is that part of the motivation behind giving the Win 10 upgrade away is they want Win 8 to disappear and be forgotten as quickly as possible.

My last update it seems it added a lot to my computer and I think most of the windows 10 without turning it on, but dang it is Not happy. On netbook now :(

Yes, The installer downloads Win10 in the background to give the illusion of a quicker installation when you actually trigger the upgrade. In the interim, your hard disk may be too full for comfortable operation. My guess is that condition would correct itself once you've completed the Win 10 installation and the excess (i.e., Win 7 or 8) files have been deleted.

Well, guess what just appeared on my taskbar (Win7) today?  Yep...

Needless to say I will not be clicking it, but out of interest have there been any updates in the whole Windows 10 situation recently in terms of improvements?

My quasi grandson did click it, he wanted to update my stuff, ok! He gets his way, knows more than I do. Still reserved and waiting for their updates.

Gary

I upgraded my Lenovo desktop with Windows 7 at the start of August to Windows 10. And I am glad I did! Like you said, very much like Windows 7, but with some Windows 8 touches thrown in. The only MAJOR thing I have noticed is that my computer takes longer to boot up now....but it is a older computer too.
