Some other things to be wary of are asbestos (e. g. bags, filters, attachments, et cetera) and leaded paint. I wouldn't doubt that many vacuum cleaner companies used these products through the 1950s anyway before lab testing and studies were initiated in the 1960s.
I wonder if OSHA has ever looked into this?
