Yours, and your neighbor's gardens, are beautiful. I miss the varied gardens of cooler climates. Here in the Southwest, it is "Incinerator ON" or "Incinerator OFF". I really can't complain, though....we had a BEAUTIFUL Fall, Winter and Spring, so I will live with this hot, humid, sticky, nastiness that descends on us between July and the end of September until things cool off. Next year I am getting air conditioning, which will make life MUCH more bearable during this season. At its worst, it was 113 last week. You simply do your strenuous stuff early in the morning (weed-pulling, floor washing, VACUUMING, etc.) and then act like a shrub during the remainder of the day.

When I visited John in Pittston, it was SO green everywhere, as was Milwaukee. Both Duane and Tania had beautiful green grounds. One treat I had while visiting John was seeing the very first June Bugs I had EVER seen, alight on Aunt Lizzie's lawn. That was great fun.

Hayfever remedies

In my experience Claratin & Benadryl are pretty much the same price and equally effective. There are generic versions too, but Jamie you should always keep you eyes out of 2 for 1 offers or buy 1 get second half price - Boots and all the major supermarkets do this from time to time, and not always at the start of the season. I lucked out this year as I was able to get 2 x 21 tablet pack for the price of one (and that 21 tablet pack did not seem that much more expensive than the seven day pack) which pretty much saw me through my hay fever season, which is usually around May.

Have you been to the doctors to have tests to establish what pollens you are actually allergic to? This may help in establish a suitable product to help - it MAY even be cheaper to get it on prescription.

Well if Claratin is no more effective than Benadryl I'm stuffed as Benadryl (which I did get on a Buy One Get One Free offer) does absolutely nothing.

I took one this morning and my right eye still feels like I've sprayed some toxic chemical in it.

Read the first three words again of my response again - "In my experience", it could well be different for you. Clearly we have different allergies as I am fine at the moment, so it might be different for you. Anyway, anything to help you through the misery that is hay fever is worth a try. And it is still worth checking out your doctor (if you have not already done so) although, if they are anything like mine, the season will be over before you can get an appointment

Hey Guys,

If you can ask the pharmacist for the generic version of a branded med as it will be a fraction of the price, if you qualify for free prescriptions just ask your GP for a it. If like me you only get a runny nose from pollen then I find a steroid based nasal spray to be extremely effective and stop my symptoms completely after using it for 2 - 3 days.

Hot Weather BOOOO

HI All Here in Long Island Ny it seems our summers are geting very hot and himid. My A_C units have not been off in days. Last year i bought a Portable unit for my basement as the deunitifer did take the water out of the rooms but made it hot. This unit is cheaper to use and cools as well I am almost 68 Oct1 so the only thing i dont like about the winter is the snow my Doctor dose not want me to do any snow removal so that part is not easy. Ok take care Doug

Folks from the U.S. Southeast would feel right at home today in Los Angeles. Earlier today it was about 80 degrees and about 80% humidity. It has cooled off a bit now, it's 76 and 75% humidity. The humidity level is very uncharacteristic for the region. It's usually very arid out here. We actually had a brief but fairly heavy rain shower last night -- unheard of in SoCal this time of year! Must be due to all that global warming going on!!

I usually save the tags that come with the plants but dug around in the pot and couldn't find it. It is definitely an ornamental grass and I believe that it is called Purple Fountain.

Well whilst in Poundland today I came across Galpharm hayfever tablets, but not just any tablets - Loratadine! I bought a pack and took one about 30 minutes ago so we'll see if they help any more than the other ones.

I think summer is alright...

It has been BOILING here this July, about 27 degrees centigrade and when it effects me from getting to sleep properly, then I have a problem with it, I like it if I am outside during the day and the sun is glaring, the sky is clear and the occasional breeze, I love it, but inside my non air conditioned house! I HATE it.
I do prefere the winter though and I do love the first snow fall, it makes me feel all christmasy! I just love beeing cold (but not freezing) and inhaling cold air, it is the freshest feeling ever!! Plus it is easier to warm up that cool down if you only have a fan! Everyone has central heating...

I must say, I like the cold weather much better. It seems we missed the extreme heat here while we were in Russia. However, it was hot there and no airconditioning.

We have had a good summer for plants and gardens here. The right amount of rain and a cooler spring helped.

We keep our airconditioning set at 70 all summer and rarely if ever open a window. My allergies just don't like it..

I Must Say

This summer has been very pleasant. Today it was unlimited sunshine, 82 degrees F and about 32% humidity. Much changed from last summer with incredible heat and a major drought. When we have weather like this, Chicagoans really appreciate it. They run around and say "It's this fabulous!" When I lived in Southern California no one would comment because it was like that every day. The other thing that is commonly known in Chicago is that you can't comment on Chicago weather (or how awful it can be in the winter) unless you are from Chicago. Then it is allowed. Oh well, I missed the change in the weather and am thoroughly enjoying it.
