which is a better cleaner??

Convertible..

A windtunnel is a big heavy noisy hunk of plastic, the convertible, because its a dirty air machine, moves volumes more air, will last many times longer, and is much easier to use.

I am an

Enthusiast and have owned and been in the vacuum business for years owning over 400 vacuums of different years from old to new and I love every one but the Wimdtunnel in all it's plastic beauty will totally out clean the Convertible .

Tom is an enthusiast and in the business so he would know which would out clean who ;)

I've used both an extremely similar Convertible and a Windtunnel Supreme in my own home and both definitely have their advantages. The Convertible is quieter, more maneuverable and far easier to service and maintain.  However, the Windtunnel has greater cleaning ability at the hose which is necessary to clean stairs, crevices, cars ect. I'd say they are equals when it comes to cleaning carpet, but the Convertible might have a slight advantage on deeper pile carpeting. Both are capable of achieving the same level of filtration since Hoover has introduced Type "A" HEPA bags.

Overall, I think the Windtunnel is a better "all-in-one" cleaner, but it's a bit loud and bulky. If I had a single story home with wall-to-wall carpeting, the Convertible would be the clear choice in my opinion due to the general overall ease of use.  Otherwise, with stairs to clean and lots of nooks and crannies, I lean towards the Windtunnel. It really depends on what sort of situation you are in.

I am a bit biased!!LOL

I hate anything new!! I bought a nice Miele a while back at the Goodwill, I dont remember the name of it, but it had the power nozzle and all, and looked new, i used it twice and let Toby Glenn have it for a vintage vac...I just cant bear to look at anything new...its almost a phobia with me...the newest vacuums I have are a D 3 Rainbow, the Silverado that Donald uses and a couple of newer 80s or 90s uprights, which I intend to get rid of soon....I hardly ever use anything newer than the 60s..I do have one of the reproduction Constellations Donald got me for Christmas a few years ago,but I dont use it much, it works great but I like the old style Hoover tools better..I couldnt run a vac shop because there is nothing I could sell with a clear concience since Airway is gone and Royal is Chinese made, those were the last holdouts...It may be true the new Hoover will outclean the Convertible...when NEW, BUT I will bet money it wont last as long or keep its performance ...the Convertible will keep on giving good service..year after year after year....and, though I rarely use one, they clean good enough....I use a straight suction machine more than anything!

which is better cleaner?

Well I can agree with with both Tom and Hans on different levels.
As far as which would clean the best-Tom may be right about the Wintunnel-OUT OF THE BOX NEW, but which would I rather use and which would be working 5 years down the road? I think I would go for the Convertible.

I really disliked all my new plastic made in china Hoovers. I thought my Hoover upright Anniversary was almost a joke as it was so loud, bulky and leaked dust.
It did have more power with the tools but the tools were so cheap and the motor so loud who would want to use it. I was GLAD to sell them and it was hard to get very much out of them even still new in the box.
Very, very sad example of what used to be a fine products.

Better Cleaner??

Much good information above.Another way to look at this is that the best Hoover will be the one that does NOT have a worn belt, full bag and wrong height setting.A lot depends on the care and knowledge of the operator.
While I agree that this style Windtunnel is one of the better modern vacs I have probably seen more bad motors on the WT than the Convertible.

When I answered the question, I looked at it from the standpoint of the average person today. Let's take a typical mother of two, full time job, no cleaning lady. She vacuums at least once every two days, with daily 'tidying up' of the living room. The convertible has terrible suction through the hose, so it wouldn't do well on her sofa. The modern person wants the tools on board, not in the closet. As always, she will want the vacuum to clean FAST. She doesn't want to deal with broken belts (because the convertible belts are in the middle of the path of dirt). She doesn't want to 'watch out for' pennies, rocks, etc. which cause fan breakage. She definitely wants HEPA bags (although MOST people today don't want bags at all). It's not really true to say that modern plastic vacuums last a short time - remember we all said Hoover Elites were JUNK and wouldn't last, yet many are now 20 years old. The Windtunnel launched in 1995, almost 20 years ago. Most are still running, or could easily be repaired. Belts and brush rollers are still available for Windtunnels, and will be for some time to come. Convertibles are done and over with. Yesterday's cleaner. If it was New, on the shelf today, no one would buy it. I cannot see a busy modern consumer buying it. It doesn't fit in with their lives any longer, just as the wonderful Hoover 28 didn't fit into the life of the consumer who bought a new Model 65 in 1958.

So from the standpoint of Cleaning The Home, the Windtunnel would certainly clean easier, faster, and 'better' in that the customer would use it far more often and be much more satisfied.

From the standpoint of an enthusiast, well, that's a different story. I prefer vintage canister vacuums to anything modern, again, as an enthusiast.

well said Tom.....

thanks for your input and broadening my view on the whole subject. Its all true what you say. greatly appreciated :) keep up the good work..

Tom is right...

MOST average people want on board attachments etc...My opinion is mainly because they never experienced the quality products of the 50s and 60s...I remember growing up, 2 of my Aunts had model G Electroluxes...I thought as a child, that anyone who had something that ran that quiet and smooth, and bought it from a salesman in their home, must be rich!!...just as I thought Dr M M Forbes, our dentist must have been the richest man on earth  because he drove a dark green with a black vinyl top 66 Imperial!....I still think just like I did then....so nothing new impresses me..I guess I never will think differently!LOL

Convertible Pic

I'm pretty sure that convertible is from the 70s, they didn't make convertibles in the late 90s/early 2000s. Production on those stopped in 1994.

The winner is!!! Hoover Windtunnel Supreme model U5454-900

Ok guys
I vacuumed with my convertible yesterday. Got the windtunnel today cleaned it up a bit new HEPA Y bag new belt, new post filter , needs new secondary filter ... Anyhow vacuumed over the same areas as I did with the convertible...new bag and belt on the convertible.. Boy was I suprised how much dirt it pulled outta my thick hi pile carpet?!?!? I was like wtf?? So yea.. I agree with Tom that the windtunnel is a better cleaner. It's one of the earlier models from 2002.. It's not high pitched and Whiney like the new TTI models.. I'm in love with this machine.. Just so amazed!!

I've never vacuumed up pennies.

If there were any on the floor, wouldn't you see it with your headlight?
I have several Windtunnels. They ARE loud, but strong. They are all plastic, yet not a scant lighter han a Convertible. Are the tools on a Convertible strong? No. Everyone knows that. But, for everyday cleaning, they're fine. The tools themselves were well-made.
I'd never make a blatant statement that no one wants bags, or that the Convertible is dead: yesterday's cleaner. It made HOOVER the great fortune it was worth.
Dial-a-Matics don't have the belt in the center, are all metal, a tad clumsy, great tool suction.
So, they all have their value. I'd never bash or paint all vacuums with a very wide brush. No attacks, just my opinion.... which we were all asked.
