It would help to know the make & model of the vacuum. Also with Kenmore's, you can go to the Sears parts direct website and look at the exploded diagrams. This may offer a clue as to how to take it apart. The prefix in the model number for Sears indicates who made the vacuum. For example 116 prefix indicates it was made by Panasonic. These vacuums would then be similar to the Panasonic vacuums. The same would be true for other manufacturers. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/
