What's an affordable vacuum with swivel steering?

Maybe the Black & Decker Air Swivel? It usually sells for around $50. It is bagless, so cleaning performance will suffer. I've never used one, so I don't have any personal experiences with it. I would recommend a bagged vacuum though. They're so much more sanitary.

Love the design of the Sebo Felix - you can even hang it up on a hook in the closet. It’s got swivel steering and a top fill bag. If you don’t need the power nozzle for carpet cleaning, the Felix Kombi is a less expensive version with just a combination rug and floor switchover nozzle. Comes with an onboard attachment hose too!

Sorry to disappoint, but the Sebo Felix is way too expensive; in addition, it's bagged. What I'm looking for is an AFFORDABLE vacuum that has swivel steering and is bagless.

On a side note, I realized I accidentally put the wrong tag in this thread: "Recent Vacuum Cleaners from past 20 years." I should've selected "Brand New Vacuum Cleaners." Oh well.

Vax/Hoover Air Lift Steerable

I had the Vax/Hoover Air Lift Steerable. I can highly recommend it. Light, maneuverable, well cleaning and fairly cheap bagless vacuum.
It has multi cyclonic system so the filter maintenance is quite minimal.
Build quality is ok and perfect for the elderly people.

I would stay away from the Black+Decker Air Swivel. It's cheap and light, but that's all.

- inner diameter of the hose is size of the middle finger.
- suction/air flow is VERY low
- it's hard to push even on the low pile carpets
- it is almost impossible to use on other than very thin carpets
- it eat belts a lot.
+ it's light
+ it's cheap

Just a thought... it’s bagless, swivel steering and it’s around $80 bucks.

The Dirt Devil Razor Vacuum is a good, solid, Lightweight vacuum and I found it did a good job at cleaning and it’s very maneuverable!

Sorry in advance if it’s too high priced for what you’re looking for to give your Mom.

Hope this helps.. it’s a nice vacuum for the price and very easy to use and operate. Best of luck to you!

I haven't heard of the Black and Decker Upright, it looks interesting.

The Hoover Air vacuums look pretty good.

Also may want to check out the Kenmore Elite Crossover Max and Elite Crossover Ultra, although they're more expensive.

I'll defend the black and decker air swivel. I have had one for almost two years and use it all the time. It is very lite and easy to use, picks up well, and is relatively easy to maintain. I agree it isn't the best for thicker carpets and the attachment it comes with is pretty bad. But for the price it is worth a look, I love mine. Simple, lite, cheap.

If you were willing to spend a bit more I would look at the hoover air series, I have had several and they all perform well. Generally not bad vacuums, although I ended up selling them all as they weren't the best suited for my needs. They also have some good deals for refurbished ones on hoover's website.

I wouldn't mind trying one of those dirt devil razors. On paper it looks like a good deal.

Okay

Looks like I'll stay away from the Black+Decker Air Swivel.

@honestjoe68 Perhaps I should check out that Dirt Devil Razor. It sounds like a good deal.

@eurekaprince My mom has mostly carpeting in her apartment.

@fan-of-fans Those Kenmore Elite Crossover vacuums are a little expensive. Plus, we don't go to Sears.

I'm leaning towards one of the Hoover Air vacuums, particularly the Air Steerable.

Sounds like your best bet is the new Hoover React QuickLift UH73300 - it did pretty well in recent Consumer Reports tests. The Kenmore Crossover did just as good but it has a longer cord, if that is important in your search.

Hello @eurekaprince!

I felt the same way as you about the Hoover React Quicklift and I ended up buying the similar React Professional Pet Plus Upright UH73220 and LOVE IT!

It’s super easy to empty, maintain (the cyclone comes apart easily to clean) and it was affordable. I also LOVE the extra long, very flexible hose, it’s super easy to use all the attachments and I find I like the baseboard and bare floor tools a lot.

So then I wanted to add the Hoover React Powered Reach Plus... totally different story and I actually disliked it so much I returned it! The hose felt like it was Two foot long and very stiff! The design team at Hoover Failed when they put the hose on one side of the power plant and the cord on the other.. so when you removed the powered lift away the cord was Always in the way, hanging in the middle when you’re trying to use the lift part. Lastly it was VERY heavy, stiff and harder to steer.

Anyhow, good choice on the Hoover React Quicklift and Amazon has it on offer for $163. So maybe that would work for niclonnic’s Mom? The barefloor and carpet REACT part is very convenient too and it’s worked 100% perfectly on all my flooring. I’d recommend it too or the Dirt Devil Razor, either are very nice.

One more point.. my opinion is the Black and Decker Air Swivel is an ok option too. No disrespect to @mike811 as I understand his points, but I’ve had fun using my B&D Air Swivel.. mine has the HEPA filter, and I’ve got many types of carpet and area rugs and it’s done quite well for me.

No matter what you choose niclonnic I’m sure it will work out and that’s super nice of you to help your Mom out! I hooked my Mom up with about four Vacuums from my collection to help her out. She’s disabled and likes her Shark Rocket Powerhead simply because it’s Lightweight and low to the ground.

Hey maybe a Shark Rocket Powerhead for your Mom niclonnic.. they are $99 bucks on QVC now... just a thought, I added the link. They are Swivel easy maneuverable and easy to use. I hope this helps!

The verdict

I could settle for the Hoover React QuickLift, but I don't think my mom will use the detachable canister.

Maybe I should just buy the Black+Decker Air Swivel.

The Shark Rocket Powerhead looks nice, but it's a floors-only vacuum.

Keep in mind the React models cost a little bit more because of the detachable feature but from what I hear, reviews are mostly positive so I don't think you could go wrong with those.

The Air Swivel line up sounds and looks nice. But however, Black and Decker from what I heard discontinued them and parts could possibly be hard to come by in the future.

Shark doesn't sell repair parts to anyone really except for sending the vacuum back to Shark and fix it themselves.

Air Swivel & Power Swivel

Biggest complaint what I have with the Black and Decker Air Swivel is lack of height adjustment (hard to push). Seems like this new Power Swivel has it now. BIG improvement in my book :)
