For me it's the Dyson DC03. It may have weak suction and an odd design, but in my experience it picks up really well, and it's just a great everyday cleaner. What's your 'illegal' favourite vacuum?

My "illegal" favorite vacuum..
is my Regina Housekeeper Plus. They managed to be both innovative while also being some of the most lousily built upright vacuums in History. Mine is mint and was maybe used once before I purchased it. I really enjoy using this machine and the Regina Enviro-Guard bags actually perform well, it's just delicate as all Housekeepers are so I'm extremely cautious each time I take it for a drive. I'm a service manager for a vacuum shop and an enthusiast so I maintain all of my machines meticulously by default, but I have to take extra special care of my Reginas.

My Dyson V7 cordless. I bought it during COVID quarantine to vacuum up cat litter in our master bath. Found out it does a good job doing touch up vacuuming of the whole house. We have a 2000 square foot house mostly carpet and it does a great job, can vacuum the whole house on one charge for quick touch up. I felt that cordless vacuums should not have the power that a plugged in kind would. This one surprised me.

My choice would probably have to be the Amway ClearTrak. From an engineering standpoint, there's nothing about it that makes it better than a Dyson. The filtration is worse, the hose is far smaller, and it has had most of the patented Dyson parts removed. However, I've never seen a plastic vacuum quite as solid feeling as the ClearTrak, making it my choice whenever I want to use a bagless machine.

The earlier Dysons such as the DC01, DC02, and DC04 I really like. Dyson back then seemed to make decent units despite the drawbacks the inherent to dual cyclone bagless design.
While I know Fantoms have a sizeable following, the practical part of me wants to keep away from them due to all their problems but I can't help but like them. Being a kid in the 90s and obsessed with vacuums made me very fond of them.

I personally love the Shark Rocket DuoClean HV381. Yes, I know, it's a Shark, and a stick vacuum no less! But it works perfectly for my living situation.
It's corded, so no worries about battery wear. It's got the traditional bristle brushroll (non Zero-M) DuoClean powerhead, and the suction is about the same as a Dyson V10 on Medium suction setting. My current home has mostly hardwood floors, mats, area rugs, and hardwood stairs, and I find it does a good job on all surfaces. Plus the brushrolls can be taken out, maintained and clean out the powerhead easily. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has no HEPA Filter on the exhaust, only a cloth micro filter, and Shark suggests you can go 1 year before washing it. I cut a Miele Super Air Clean Filter to size instead and replace every 3 months.
I picked it up at Factory Direct.ca here in Ontario for $185. I liked it so much, a year later I found the same one at Value Village for $15 and snatched it right up to keep as a spare!

One of my favorite vacs is the Dirt Devil Vision
Specifically the older Swivel glide models. I don't own one, as they can be very rare, but I have seen a couple in person and I would like to get one because I currently don't own a bagless vacuum. I also want one of these dreaded machines because I want to see if they are as bad as people really say. (I'm sure it isn't) I like this machine partly because of how it looks, I'm not sure what it is, but something about that machine's design is appealing to the eye.
The picture below is just one I found on the internet and I don't own that machine.

The Oreck Magnesium RS is mine.
I've always hated working on them, found them to be flimsy, motor power isn't great and the single row brushroll is a bit pathetic. However I purchased one when Wal-Mart had them on clearance and liked it so much I bought a few others for parts/when this one breaks. It's quickly gone from my least favorite Oreck to one of my favorite machines to use in my home. Works well across everything from my barefloor to thicker area rugs many other machines struggle with. I've also been pleasantly surprised by how little I've found it leaves behind when cleaning after with other vacuums.

I've noticed Oreck brought those machines back as the Discover. I haven't used one yet and I don't know what all has changed other than the handle.

Shark rocket
I’ve always been a big Electrolux/Aerus fan but a friend bought a Shark rocket stick vac back when they first came out on qvc. I tried it when I was at her house and she wanted to show it off and was sort of impressed with it. Within a year or so she passed away and she was renting my house so I had to do most of the emptying of her house since her son lived and worked out of state and didn’t have much time to deal with everything. I ended up keeping the Shark rocket aside thinking I might want it and my Eureka stick vac I use for quick clean ups broke so I decided to recruit the shark as a replacement. I was again impressed. It was the Hv302q orange model. I didn’t like the hard floor attachment though with the mop pad. Seemed clunky to me. I gave away this model to my partners parents when they moved and were downsizing, they love it and still have it. I replaced it with a UV330 model from Costco and have like it as it has the hard floor hero traditional style floor brush along with the usual power nozzle. Also the wand folds for getting under furniture. I really liked it but recently my partner managed to step on the combination crevice tool and dusting brush cracking the sliding dusting brush so now it is a mess and then he managed to somehow break the wands folding joint (multiplex shark calls it) on the wand so now it’s kinda floppy. I didn’t use the vac regularly since I started using it in 2018. So now I’m kind of annoyed that it is breaking apart as my partner is kind of a klutz. Costco has a good return policy so considering returning it and getting a refund because it ended up with issues after not a lot of regular use. I think the multiflex folding wand is a weak design for sure and now I’m seeing replacements on ebay and says 90 have been sold. Also seeing the model I have being sold on eBay by refurbishers in various states…motor heads or power heads only. I have a feeling a lot of these are falling apart at that folding wand and people are returning them or buying replacement wands. The wand is pretty pricey to replace. $43!!! Undecided if I should just get a solid non folding replacement wand for $20 or the folding wand again which I’m less apt to do , or just return the whole thing. I have since picked up a used HV302 model at a thrift store for $39 and it is in pretty good shape so don’t really need to repair the other so another factor which may lead to my just bringing it back to Costco. I actually kept the box too in my attic!!! I usually do that for anything pricey at least while it’s under warranty in case I have issues.
These stick vacs are getting pricey now. I just checked out what Costco had on Monday and an equivalent corded model is $199! I think I paid $112 for the one I have and mine seems to be better made with a bigger dirt bin and larger filter. I saw dyson versions also but those are even more. I was flabbergasted to see the cordless dyson one is for sale for $649!!!! That’s insane. A friend had the dyson cordless. One I I was quite unimpressed with it because it didn’t work properly on her rug. It wouldn’t pull back or push forward properly and she had to do some sort of weird antics to go over her living room rug with it.
Well. Of course I think my 5 year warranty is over but I will check my receipt so if I can’t get the part free from Shark I may just return it and use the thrift store model. In the meantime most of my regular vacuuming I’m using my old reliable Electrolux canister model G. Quality built and lasting…it’s around 60 years old right now.
I like the rockets for their convenience and versatility but shouldn’t have because of the issues of parts breaking. They also do a good job of not clogging the filter too quick so suction stays good. But again, it’s all plastic and not built well enough to take the beating vacuums can end up with.
