what vacuums have YOU found in the trash?

Hoover Dial-A-Matic

Ugh, so do I. In the thirty years since they've been discontinued, seems nowadays you hardly ever see them anymore. I do still see Concept 1's at the flea market from time to time, but somehow I prefer the DAM. Its design was alot more revolutionary. Hoover definitely took three steps forward and two steps back when they sold the clean-air patents to Panasonic and came out with the Concept One. A noisier machine for sure....

Come to think of it found a Hoover DAM in the trash at the apartment house where I used to live but was to far gone to be useful-just lopped off its cord.I can agree the DAM is FAR better than the Concept one-even the Convertible is a better, quieter, better quality, and more efficient machine than the Concept. The Concept design should have been scrapped.

No offence, but I disagree ...

The Concept One was (Is) an amazingly good cleaner. I am kicking myself even as I type because I found a nice model at a thrift shop that I didn't pick up and they priced it at $25.00. I'm going back Monday, and if it is still there, it is coming home with me. It will need spa treatment, but when I'm done with it, it will be like new. I will post before and after pictures.

@ Doug

I know what you mean."At one time I found alot in the trash too but since our city has gone to an automated trash collection system using huge garbage cans you cant see whats in them". We have the same system here but being such a small state I still get luck in the few other towns that dont yet use this system.

Found an Electrolux this morning!

A model 1521 with the PN6A power nozzle. Haven't plugged it in yet to see if it works. Thrown out three houses down from me. So I guess there are still curbside finds to be had. As far as the Concepts go - they do groom the carpet very well, I just think they're chintzy in comparison to the DAM. The plastic base was a blatant cost-cutting touch. Hoover boasted the fact that you could suck up bobby pins with the DAM and not damage anything. Not true with the Concept. And no matter how you slice it, the Dial-A-Matic gets the crown for ease of tool use. It was a let down from the DAM, but no where near as much of a let down as when the Elite replaced the Convertible. I've seen a commercial Concept, but was there ever a commercial Dial-A-Matic (even as a prototype)?

YES!!! I found another one! It is nothing special, a Dirt Devil Extreme compact upright, kind of like the dynamite. so there is a lady from our church who is disabled and I help her with some stuff around her apartment and I found it when I took her Garbage down to the dumpster, I always look for vacuums,so I was excited when I saw the handle sticking out of the dumpster. I figured the motor was burned out, but I got it home and turned it on and I still cant figure out what was wrong with it! It works fine. the funny thing is that I went to Goodwill today and they had the same thing and wanted $37.99 for it!

At present in my collection have two Concepts-one is powerdriven like a Kirby "G" series-but the Hoovers power drive is clunky and crude in comparison to the Kirby. The Kirbys are so much better-when the Vacuum cleaner Hospital was operating out here(the vac shop that closed down)Concepts were regular "Patients"Clogging. The "L" shaped intake was always getting clogged with wads of pet hair, people hair,or whatever. The Concept is a clunky machine to me-The DAMS of course--BETTER,The Convertibles-their SIMPLICITY is what makes them better in my mind then the Concept.-The straight thru dirt path-the dirt and airflow doesn't have to turn corners.

My best trash find, way back when I first started collecting was a Kirby CClassic 3. It has the big box and the normal vacuuming attachments, and I found the rest of the tools like the Handi-Butler and the Rug Renovator for it later on. It was in very good shape and clean too, I was surprised they threw it out, but very happy to get it.
