What is the quietest vacuum cleaner of all time, and what is the noisiest? "Discuss."

The quietest Vacuum Cleaner I own is my 1982 Electrolux 502S which, if not for the beater brush roll, would be almost entirely silent!  When switched on the only thing you can hear is the brush roll beating the carpet and if you lift the head up to prevent this there is just a very quiet whine present which could be talked over without raising your voice.

A well made cleaner indeed.

Unfortunately, I would have to say my loudest Vacuum Cleaner is my 1977 Hoover Senior-Ranger which sounds like a small airplane taking off.  It is vindicated though by the fact that it cleans amazingly well and has lasted 36 years with no major repairs (just new belts and bags).

The type of noisy cleaner I cannot abide is the ones that are loud because of overly powerful motors, such as just about every budget to mid-range vacuum on the market these days.

On the subject of noisy Kirbys

In 1995, my parents acquired a used Kirby Classic and when the hose was attached activating high speed ; the noise level was excruciating! However the suction was wonderful. My mother suggested that I use earplugs when using it. I always thought that the 519 model that that my parents owned could be quite noisy until I heard the sound of the used Classic in high speed. I own a Heritage II and by comparison it has a rather smooth pitch when running on high speed.

"Your Senior is louder than your VAX Performance C91PF1B

You know Ryan I had completely forgotten about that Vax.  As such, I stand corrected - the Senior is my second loudest vacuum.

I will maybe get a couple of strange looks for this but...

What about a central cleaning system. I think maybe it's split. Away from the main unit on the floor they are very quiet. All you hear is the suction and maybe a power nozzle if you have one. But the system is somewhat loud unless it has a muffler. Even with a noise muffler the main unit can be pretty quiet.

Nilfisk's

I'm not sure they are actually the quietist vacuums ever made but of the ones I have ever owned I have had 4 Nilfisk’s a GA70 and a twin motor one I cant remember the model number of then a GA 80 and finally a GM 80. I think the GA70 was the quietist of them all but they all had a very deep purring motor. I think the loudest Vacuums I have had have to be 2 Kirby’s. Currently we have 2 Mieles that are OK on the lower settings but not that quiet on full power. and a Dyson city vac that screems, a dyson hand vac that just makes an unpleaset noise and a G-tec that makes a lot of noise while doing very littel. I'm not really sure how they get away with calling that thing a vacuum its realy only a good sweeper.

Any vacuum can be the quietest! As long as it's not TURNED ON...

As for uprights, the little old 40s General-Electric AVF-26 is barely over a hum! And I think I'd have to go against the Classic series being loud. Owning 2 Classic 1-CRs, I can say that one is an ancient and abused train-wreck (Loud, Plus the bag bloated over with ancient Doggy-Dog hair), and the other one is a mint, purring Kitten (Smooth and Gentle, with a beautifully supple Hose and attachments to go with)!

Another nominee being my NEW (To me,Atleast!) Kenmore Duo-Power upright (Thanks again, Dustin! I'm glad you're liking the motor in it's place)! It's rushing air on low, and on High, well, Not so quiet. Still, Great little cleaner!

As far as Canister cleaners, Again, a vote for Kenmore! in this case the Duo-Power Disco Funk Canister 1970s Style, In glorious Avocado and Wood Grain! a whisper on low, and on high, well, See the upright's adaptation above...

Now to display these quiet thingys!

Let's start with DUO-POWER...In all Her mighty Funky-ness...

As for the rest,

<h1>Here's the ancient train-wreck of a Classic 1-CR, Farm-Fresh!</h1>
Cool! My Text did a THING! That's neat. But anyhow here's a video of the AVF-26, Feel free to request machine demonstrations, My channel has been quite bare lately!

Eric (jade_angel),

The model 801 was produced from circa 1951 to 1987. The loudest version of that model was produced from 1985-1987; in those last years, the 801 had a 4.5 amp motor.

(NOTE: When looking at the serial #, the letter you see after the date code refers to the motor design revision. In that case, any 801 with the 4.5 amp motor will have the motor series letter code as "F" or "G.")

I would agree with others that the Electrolux Model G is perhaps the quietest vacuum I've ever owned. Maybe the Model XXX ranks right up there with it.

The loudest vacuum by far is the Royal 2075. I no longer own this vacuum, but it is LOUD!!!
