In my experience I find neither to be all that successful at telling you when the bag is full, but I have found bag full indicator lights much better as they are more accurate at determining lack of airflow going through the cleaner. In my experience piston bag full indicators vary, some take a lot for the piston to shoot across the other side and some a really loose and just shoot half way across when the cleaner is switched on with an empty bag.

That is my view anyway, what do you guys think?

I look at the bag anyway too but I like to have a little light just for fun. :P
They do actually come on when the bag clogs even if it is not full which would be great for the general consumer who would not normally think of changing it till it is jam-packed

Rex, I totally agree with you! I NEVER trust bag change indicators, electronic or manual. I have found that for my cleaning situation, which is that I pick up lots of fine dust & soil/sand, & very little carpet fibers or pet hair, my bags do tend to clog a bit faster than normal. I have always checked my cleaners for suction by hand on the end of the hose, & change bags when necessary.
