This is the Hoover Power Drive model. It is a fan first system. This was produced when Hoover was owned by Maytag in the early to mid 90's. These uprights were the TOL Hoover's at the time.
Similar base design to Elite, they have onboard tools, fan first system, flat belt, 2 row brush agitator. Large capacity Hoover Type A bag with air freshener compartment built in for scented tablets.They are Self Propelled forward and reverse. I like the Self Propel on this Hoover much better than on our 2 Kirby G4's. There are some that would disagree with me but that is my opinion. You can use vacuum with self propel turned off, its much easier to do so on here than on a Kirby. Running in a Kirby in neutral is still a P.I.T.A, they really need the self propel.
Attachments are onboard and conversion is very simple. Not the best tool suction in the world but for a fan first upright its pretty good and does the job for any task I've given it.
Most members on this forum know that I am head over heels in love with power nozzle canister vacuums, hence the Hoover PowerMax Supreme in my hands for profile picture. However these Hoover uprights are awesome and its definite one my favorite uprights!! I highly recommend getting one.
I purchased mine from an estate sale for about $25. I debated as I didn't think it would be a good unit. I AM SO GLAD I MADE THE PURCHASE. Knowing what I do now, I'd pay a $100 for another if I saw it probably and was in reasonable condition.
These units are very basic. Don't suck up any large metal screws, pennys or other sharp stuff and you'll have a good machine for many years of use!! Use the carry handle on the back and do not carry unit from operation handle!!

Great machine, I used to own two of them, sold one but I still have my blue one like in the pic above. Mines all complete! It was used heavily and when I got it I had to replace the sole plate (cracked to pieces). Othereise works great.

Give practily anything to get another one of those. I had the top of the line (Burgundy model) and I gave it to some friends who needed a vacuum.And I have regreted it ever since....

These did follow the Concept line but were more so the successor to the PowerMax models. They came out in 1994 and were succeeded by the WindTunnel. During that time they were the TOL upright for Hoover. I always liked them because of the clear tool storage area on top. My favorite was the green.
I have seen a few of them around lately, mostly blue ones like the one pictured above.

The Hoover Dimension Supreme, and Dirt Finder upright are very nice vacuums. Again similar in line as well. Those models were more middle of the line.
The Power Drive model is a step above those and does still have some significant differences. The Power Drive model runs on a 2 belt system with different agitator design. Most of the Power Drives have a built in air freshener compartment. The Power Drives use a Hoover Z bag instead of an A bag. The Self Propelled is also much easier to service. Everything is accessible except for headlight by removing bottom plate. On the Elites and Dimensions you have to remove top housing and bottom plate in-order to replace belt. Much easier on the Power Drive.
The Power Drive system puts the rear wheels further back and on a sturdy metal axle, making it easy to roll room to room. It's a heavier unit than the Elites and should be carried by its special built in carry handle found on the rear of the machine.

I passed on this trio of Hoovers today...
Man have thrift stores gone up in price these days! $42 each on these...even on a half off day i would have to be really jones'in for a Hoover fix to jump. I'll post what i did get in another thread as it was a sweet day even though i had to pass on this Hoover honey pot.

Straight from the thrift store, pre spa pics, $6.
Not really high on my list to acquire, but the blue color and the nice price sold me.
It runs good, and appears complete. Though I wonder how much a brush roll for these go for, it may be in need.[this post was last edited: 8/4/2014-22:13]

Bad news for you....you shouldn't have spent that $6....TTI discontinued brushrolls for this line of Hoover uprights years ago & is long ago NLA. I know because I had one & bought it just as they were literally throwing out the last of their stock.

No it's good news...
the brush roll looks fine and i also noticed this machine is labeled "made in the USA." I tried it out and she is quiet, light and powerful. On the low pile carpet i tested it on i can say i prefer the preformance of the machine as is...no power drive please, shag may be a different story, stay tuned. The axle for the front wheels needs some attention with steel wool. Add in a quick spa day, a new bag (type Y in there now) and belt and i'm in business.
It's a Hoover Model U5223-920 taking type Z bags, and this machine looks better in this blue than any other Hoover i have seen. I took the pic before i let the Dimension 1000 loose on all that fuzz chocking the bottom of this machine, you're only seeing the tip of that iceberg here.
