What do you think about Oreck Vacuums?

Help Support VacuumLand:

I (briefly) owned a commercial XL model and that blasted thing was SO LOUD. Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s a vacuum cleaner so it is going to make some noise, but the pitch of the motor was a bit to high for comfort.
Reminds me of Shark Vacs, they sound like drills from the dentist.
They, in my opinion, aren’t worth the price you pay considering they aren’t deep cleaners. You will receive the same benefit if you buy the $50 Bissell at Walmart.

As a collector I own four Oreck Vacuums. I have an Oreck Edge, an Oreck Axis (Purple) an Oreck Forever Series Gold and the Oreck Ultimate Handheld. They are part of my collection and I enjoy using them. Yes, my USA or German Made Vacuums might clean better or are quieter, but it is what it is and I love all my vacuum cleaners. I find with my low pile carpeting and area rugs, the Axis does a nice enough job and it’s light and easy to maneuver. The Oreck Edge was just for fun as I love the futuristic design and the attached suction hose is very convenient since most Oreck don’t have built in tools. The Forever series I got for a steal and I like the Gold color. I would never buy the latest Oreck Elevate vacuums unless I could find one for under $200. I didn’t pay more than $150 for any of my above Oreck and they were all brand new. Similar vacuums I own are the Maytag M500, Lightweight Upright and the Hoover Platinum Lightweight Bagged Upright and the Riccar Cordless SupraLite Model R10CV. It’s funny how similar considering TTI Floor Care and Tacony make them, but each has it’s own unique features and different build quality and style. I just realized I need to update my photos, I have over 250 vacuums in my collection and some I’ve not taken pics of yet.

I remember saying this in another thread but Orecks are alright in my opinion. Not all Orecks perform the same, the XL21 for example cleans about three times better than the regular XL models. I have a Neighbor that owns both a XL21 and a XL2, I will admit that everyone's opinions might change overtime but recently when I used their XL21 again, at first I thought it was alright. But now, wow I can't believe how good of a machine it is because it had just been fixed and serviced. The XL2 which also just got fixed and serviced as well, I still have the same opinion on that one which means that I still don't like using it. But does that still mean that I don't like Oreck? No. They're not really bad vacuums but I've used other vacuums that are better than Oreck and there are definitely some vacuums that I've used that are even worse than Oreck. I still like to collect them. And they actually have great support services that they provide.

@thegen5gal - "You will receive the same benefit if you buy the $50 Bissell at Walmart."

Hmm, that's not true. The only $50 bagged Bissell available on Walmart's website is the Powerforce bag 1739, which is a sad vacuum indeed. I've seen this vacuum in person. The materials are very cheaply made. The Orecks are much better.

I like them

I am sure the villagers will be chasing me with torches soon, but I like the Oreck.

Recently I bought a Refurbished Oreck Edge. I am very impressed with this little vacuum.

The first thing you will notice with the Edge is that it has a metal frame up the back that connects the handle to the nozzle part of the vacuum. The bag slides up and down on the frame. Most other Orecks handle attaches to the fill tube, which tends to wear and wobble over time, giving the vacuum a more flimsy feel.

The addition of the frame adds weight, so the Edge is not an 8lb vacuum, more like 13lbs, but sturdy and well balanced.

The other thing that is noticed with the Edge is it has a light duty hose attached. This is one of the only if not the only Oreck upright that I know of with a hose. The hose comes with a crevice tool permanently attached it activates when the handle is in the upright, locked position. Suction is not great through the hose, but it does serve "light duty" to clean base boards and edges.

Another thing that I noticed with the Edge was it is much quieter than previous Orecks I have used. It almost has the Electrolux power nozzle buzz/hum. I am surmising that this comes from the long life belt this unit uses.

Very bright LED headlights, and a nice bag system rounds out the vacuum. With a stiffer brush roll for better grooming and cleaning. There is also a multi-speed motor that you can step through about four steps from fastest to slowest. This is a bagged machine with a HEPA/Charcoal bag that is very large, expensive, but large.

A Kirby or Electrolux it is not, but this Oreck, like the other light weight machines serve the purpose of being easier to handle, maneuver, and maintain than attachment laden heavier vacuums on the market. True they still do better on lower pile carpeting, or bare floors, but I have always maintained: A light weight vacuum that is used often, is more effective than a heavy machine that sits in the closet.

So prepare yourself, Villagers, light your torches. Orecks are not that bad of a vacuum.

I will bring a fire extinguisher to fight off the villagers! Lol

See pics of my Oreck Edge.. LOVE it too fir all the reasons you said and I Love the electronic variable speed too! I really love the attached crevice tool hose, it extends so long I can get all the nooks and crannies Lol.

I just wish I’d bought the matching Edge canister vacuum.. I’d pay top dollar for one if I could FIND one in excellent condition.. can’t find one anywhere! :-(

I’ve attached pictures to Rile up the Villagers! Lol (Joking guys.. Love ya all!)

I have seen several of the Edge canisters on Ebay, but top dollar is what they are asking. I think the lowest I saw one was $149.

Thank for posting pics of the Oreck Edge. Looks really cool! What's the build quality like on the hose? I've always liked the simple design of the Oreck machines.

Does anyone here have an "accepable price guide" when buying used Orecks? I know everyone has an opinion, but it's like every single time I see an Oreck here at ANY thrift store, it's $29.99 - $39.99. I got a deal on getting one for $7.00 but the motor is on its last legs and someone thought it was a bagless vacuum (it was run with no paper bag installed - inner bag is full of lint).

Hi guys!

I really Love my Oreck Edge and it feels well built with quality materials. The hose is very durable but still easily flexible and has a nice handle and extendable creavice tool built in. I really wanted it when it first came out but didn’t take the plunge, then when I did they had just run out of the canister Vacuums. The handle is metal and much more sturdy than the others, I don’t mind the little added weight as it’s still very easy to pick up and to use. I also love the bright headlights and the digital fingertips power control is really nice. It’s got slow start like high end machines and variable speed. Also, it’s much quieter than the lower end Orecks. Plus I just Love the colors too.. like a metallic dark bronze/brown and the bag is really high quality. It’s just a very nice Oreck, I can see once I got mine that it would have been worth its original price because it’s made well.

Speaking of the Edge Canister.. I never thought to check eBay so thanks Kirbysthebest, I will check and if I can find one closer to $100 I’d buy it but $150 is too much unless it’s brand new, unused, Not refurbished.

Thanks guys!

Acceptable is what you are willing to pay

I have always paid from $20 - $40. The factory refurbished and warranted Edge I paid $49.95 with free shipping. I bought two.

My signature series I paid $20 and $15 shipping. I replaced the belt and brushroll, and it was like new.

Another thing i like about Orecks is they are extremely easy to work on. Usually all you need is a Phillips head screwdriver.

@kirbysthebest

Thanks for the info on the canister! I already own the Oreck Ultimate Canister, the Oreck Compact Canister and the Oreck XL Pro 5 Canister Vacuums. Sadly I didn’t buy it fast enough and I just checked eBay and other places online with no luck on buying the Edge Canister. I only want one because they look so cool and I Love the colors and look of it.

Live and learn I guess, now if I’m on the fence about any vacuum and have the money, I just buy it so I don’t regret it if it isn’t available again. I also wanted the other Oreck XL Edge (in Silver) too but missed out. But the one I did get was my top choice, and the more deluxe of the two. As far as all my research it was and still is the only full sized Bagged Oreck Upright to have a built in hose. Now that doesn’t include the Oreck Touch Bagless Upright that had a hose and tools on board, the Edge was the only Bagged with a hose.

Thanks again everybody!
