I grabbed a fair condition Royal 880, 3.0 amps, late 1970's at a garage sale today. No bag. Don't know if it is A or B. Hoping B because there is no spring to fasten an A bag onto the tube. Good thing it was only $20. Brush is in good shape. Runs quiet and blows hard. Needs some cleaning. I see a hole for oil. Never had a Royal before. Would I use something like 3 in 1 oil? I clean carpets for a living. My main vacuum is a Koblenz U310 DC, but I really need a powerful and tough bagged vacuum, I'm hoping this might be it. Thanks.

The Royal 880 would use "A" type bags, if you still have the original light blue vinyl diamondback bag. If you say your cleaner has a 3 amp motor, the year of mfg. would be between 1975-80.

Example: Serial #57D-A-75296 (April 1975)

or

Example: Serial #78G-L-19125 (July 1978)

or

Example: Serial #M78-C-27232 (December 1978)

Thank you,

Ben

I believe it would take A bags, or Eureka F&G bags. You could probably find a new spring at Hesco.

Yes, the F & G bags are an exact replacement for type A Royal bags. As for oiling, take a look, you might have 2 oil tubes. If there is only one it will be in the back, indicating that the front bearing is a perma-lube bearing. If there are 2 tubes, there will be one in front and back both. I would not use regular 3 in 1 oil, but 3 in 1 does make an electric motor oil that may be found at stores like Lowe's or Home Depot.
I think the 880 will be an excellent choice for you for a powerful, durable, and maneuverable bagged vacuum.

If you want to use "B" type bags-get a cloth "B" outer bag for your machine from any vacuum store or parts supplier-it wouldn't be original equipment-but would allow you to use the better "B" bag system.I tried a "B" bag on my 3A Royal and it worked MUCH better!
