What Canister To Buy?

My aunt and uncle are in need of a canister and I don't know what to recommend them. I have a solid knowledge of uprights, but am not really sure about canisters. They have a small apartment with no carpeting and all floors. They were considering Miele, but given my vac shop experience with those units, I told them to steer clear. (Motors, circuit boards, cords, etc) If nothing else, I'll try to find them a used Rainbow but that's all I can think of. How are the Tacony canisters? My shop is a Riccar/Miele dealer and I never see any of them in for service.

Steel City has the wonderful, powerful, small and light Titan T-1400 canister. From the cord rewinder to the variable speed motor to the full size attachments, it's a wonderful machine that's less than $200 at retail with a great fit and finish. The telescopic wand makes it easy to store. I have sold many dozens of them, and have never had one moment's problems with any of them.

I recommend

The Aerus Lux classic. Very simple and easy to use and very reliable. The Lux Legacy and Platinum models might be too much for them honestly and are more expensive. The Lux classic is very simple and easy with no circuit boards. It comes with a power nozzle for carpet but also a hard floor tool for the floors and you may ask the dealer to sun the combination rug and floor tool for them as it flips over for any small area rugs or door mats and have them throw in the mini power nozzle sidekick in too to sweeten the deal. You’ll need to find an Aerus dealer near you.

Only other recommendation would be a Shark rocket stick vac. Incredibly powerful and pretty easy to use and small so for an apartment that might be all they would need. My in laws use theirs and love it on their 1750 square foot house and it hangs on the wall in the utility room conveniently. Bagless so doesn’t need bags but they need to understand how to access and wash the 3 filters once a month.

That's interesting you wouldn't recommend a Miele to them, that would be one of my recommendations. One of the vacuum stores that I worked for carried Miele and we've had ZERO problems with them at the time. The only time we've ever had Mieles come in for repair is from customer abuse, not the machine's fault. However, the Tacony canisters are quite the opposite. While they clean great, but I have seen them become problematic. At least as far as the Riccar Primas go. If I had to recommend a Tacony canister, the Simplicity Jill, the Brio, or the Sport is what I would look into.

I'd also recommend SEBO, Lindhaus, Numatic NaceCare, MetroVac, Perfect/Clean Obsessed, and my personal favorite Kenmore.

A Sebo would be a great option for your aunt and uncle. I love Miele’s (as obvious by my username and profile picture) but working at a vacuum store where we sell Sebo and Miele’s among other brands and the Sebo’s (at least from us) are offered with a special dealer code that unlocks a 10/10/7 warranty (10 years on the motor, 10 years on the parts, 7 years on labor). I rarely ever see Sebo’s in for repair over the past few years and when I do they’re just cleanings and service. Miele’s also rarely come in but I have seen bigger issues with them than Sebo’s typically. The warranties have also gotten pretty bad with Miele. The E3 Premium is a great option overall. We include the canister value pack too with the flexible crevice tool, swiveling parquet brush, turbo brush, extra long hose, and adapter free with the sale of most Sebo’s (especially the Felix’s).

I second what others have said either a sebo or Miele would be a good option. I work at a super high volume Miele dealer and it’s very rare that they come back for issues not caused by customer neglect, think over pulling cords or installing the bags wrong. The compact c1 turbo team with the optional parquet twister would be a perfect fit for a small apartment as it’s super easy to work with quiet, rock solid reliable and an overall joy to use.
