well to awnser your qestion on wards and penneys...

Wards sold Eureka products pretty much only until the late and mid 80's. JCPenneys did Hoover products and Eureka canisters until the late 80's. Sears, was exclusively Whirlpool made machines to Kenmores specs, until Whirlpool sold their Vacuum division to Panasonic in the early 90's, but tin 1989 1990 and 1991 they did start selling name brands. Hoover had their special High Performance line for Sears. which had two Convertible type machines and a Concept. until the late 80's most company just private labeled name brand machines so that they appeared to be "made" by that catalog company.

Here's the low down:

JCPenney first began selling "real" Hoovers and Eurekas - rather than those equivalents with the JCP label - in 1985. I know my JCP Spring/Summer 1984 catalog still had the JCP-branded versions.

If anyone has a JCP Spring/Summer 1985 catalog to confirm the transition, please let me know.

Wards? I'd say around 1988, because I remember their last branded take on Eureka's Roto-Matic 1700 series was a purplish-blue color.
