I was browsing eBay for Fantoms just for fun, and came across this odd Fantom Fury for sale.

What's weird about this particular Fury is that while it has the older design, the "FURY" wordmark is placed right below the Fantom logo, as opposed to the base of the collection bin. It also has the pull-out fluff trap. The date code is 0113, which means it was manufactured in the 13th week of 2001.

Ever seen this version of the Fury before?

The machine design with the pull out fluff trap was terrible. Virtually no airflow. The fury suffered from low airflow due to the design of the high-efficiency cyclone. Remember Fantom was in the business of selling HEPA filters. They designed the machine to fill the HEPA filter within 1 to 2 years. That is what led to the rift between James Dyson and Fantom. He had designed washable filters, however, they didn’t want to use them because HEPA filters cost the customer $75. In 2002 Dysons were here and fantom was no more.

Electroluxxxx, of course I know that certain someone; it's me. My Fury is still alive and well; I just haven't touched it since the plastic near the handle release pedal broke. I haven't found another housing yet.

Dysonman1, despite the Fury having low airflow, it still does a very good job of cleaning carpets, most likely due to the brushroll. My machine doesn't have the pull-out fluff trap, only the one at the top that's sealed by a rubber plug. However, the screen was apparently rotted, so Mike removed it before sending the vacuum to me. Supposedly, that gave the Fury a slight power boost, but I honestly can't tell a difference. I agree that Fantom was a greedy company due to the HEPA filter business.

Very late model Fury...

All late model Furys had that lint trap door thing... it’s very possible too that it’s a refurbished model, that’s why every once in a while you see Furys and Thunders that look a little mismatched. Definitely way overpriced. Again, it doesn’t hurt to use the vacuum every once and a while that handle release assembly doesn’t affect its operation.
