Walmart is Selling Reconditioned Kirbys

Help Support VacuumLand:

I was in Wally World the other day shopping pet supplies (yes, and I am ashamed to admit it but the fiancee adores the place) and thought that since Panasonic shows Walmart as a seller I might go through the vacuum dept and see if they had any of their canister vacs on display. Nope, the only canisters were a pair of tiny useless suction only things and the rest were bagless upright plastivacs. I wanted to hurl.

I'll bet those reconditioned Kirbys still fetch as much money as a good many Walmartians spent buying their most recent used car. People are funny though. I bought my fiancee a nice Windsor upright and she doesn't use it. Instead she borrows a friends bagless Eureka upright plastivac.

Panasonic canisters aren't bad vacuums. They are actually pretty darned good. I wanted to look at the premium model, the MC-CG937 and compare it to it's kissing cousin that is badged Kenmore Elite. Panasonic didn't adopt the new style of wands and tools used by Kenmore for the Progressive and Elite series vacs and the canister bodies are different due to the different tool storage needs, but they have the other good design features of a Kenmore canister including the bag caddy and Optiflow for a lot less money than Kenmore charges. All things considered they might be one of the best canister vacuum values out there today. I sometimes regret the Progressive I bought recently due to the funky tools and think I may have been better off buying a Panasonic.

The MC-CG902 model canister appears to be the exact same vacuum as the previous generation Kenmore Progressive, an example of which I have apart right now for refurbishment. I'm not going to buy one but wanted to look. In fact, I wanted to take some measurements of the bag caddy from the MC-CG937 for a Frankenvac project coming to a carpet near you soon.

Kenmore & Panasonic canister vacuums are BAD vacuums! The Panasonic-made canister motors, both the ones with the white plastic ring around the fan & the new Inducer motor, are made to fail & die prematurely. You're lucky to get 5 to 6 years out of a Panasonic canister motor before it needs replacement. You're actually better off to buy a lower-line Kenmore, one of the "jelly-bean" style canisters that has a slightly smaller bag compartment but still uses the same bag....they use a motor made by Chinese manufacturer Sip Cinderson that is much better quality & will last a bit longer. It also doesn't hurt that you can use standard attachments without needing an adapter too. The previous Kenmore canisters, the Whispertone & Progressive models from early 2000's, which they first introduced the HEPA exhaust filter, at first used Ametek motors, which again were much better made than what they use now.

As for the new-style hose, wand & tools, Panasonic can't use them on their own vacuums as Sears gets the newest designs first before Panasonic gets to use them. It has nothing to do with different tool storage needs.

Another thing that annoys me with Panasonic & Kenmore vacuums that are produced by Panasonic, is they have never been able to produce a vacuum with a sealed True HEPA filter. Other lower & mid line canister makes, such as Eureka, Electrolux "Eurekaluxes", even a couple of Dirt Devil bagged canisters have done it, yet Kenmore & Panasonic can't get their act together & do it! The only one I have seen lately that looks like it might be sealed is the new 600 series bagless powerhead canister, & that would make sense since it is multi-cyclonic, & would put a lot of dust back into the room if it didn't have a sealed True HEPA filter.

Here is a link to the "jelly-bean" style Kenmore canisters I was talking about. But I always reccommend to anyone buying a Kenmore canister to buy one from the 1990's or 1980's BEFORE they introduced the HEPA filter, & to make sure it has a Ametek double-stage motor in it & that they change the carbon brushes.
