Vintage Vacuum Cleaner Business Opportunity

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Intriquing, dizzying, fun, exhausting, satisfying, but ultimately disappointing for me, I'm sure.

It really makes one wonder- How MANY vacuums have been manufactured in history?

And why have these been sitting for 20 years?

And what happened to the business?

I can't imagine anyone buying this whole lot.  They'd be better off selling it by the piece, or in smaller lots.

I just came across this E-Bay listing a few minutes ago. I was quite amazed at what was in the pictures and what was written. This reminded me of a vac shop that was owned by Gordon Smith, located in Agawam, Ma., that closed when the owner's health quickly failed. This happened in June 2011. He was the person I had helped when he relocated his business in 2004. He gave me a number of uprights for helping in the move.

Everything that was in his store ended up in the yard, front, side and back. It was so sad to see all this outdoors exposed to the weather. I wrote a letter to Gordon and was called by the person in charge of his care and property. We met one day and he let me walk around the property. I did get a chance to go into the kitchen and saw 3 old uprights, makes not known to me. The man did show me what was in the locked garage. I could not believe it. The garage was stuffed floor to rafters with boxes of new vacuums, mostly Kirbys, and even three suitcase style record players. I had been told by someone that knew him that the whole house was loaded with vacuums as well as other types of appliances.

The last time I went to the house the man was in the cellar handing his daughter hoses and boxes of parts and throwing them into a dumpster. I asked if I could come in and was told know that everything was being thrown out. As far as the boxed vacuums in the garage I don't know what happened to them, but everything else was trashed. There is one last thing, Gordon had a Vacuette he proudly displayed in his store. Don't know what happened to it.

I did take pictures of what was outside the house.

Vac Store Contents----Sell?---OR---Trash!?!

The offer to sell vacs on the west coast and the story above of the trashed and lost vacs in the east are of some interest to me as a vac store owner who is older, tireder, weaker and closer to death with every passing day! With the exception of the NIB vacs that I do not have the contents of the 3 trailers could have come out of my building. Both stories above could be from similar health related issues.(And the OR seller does invite questions from any with a serious interest.)As to my vacs I very much want most GONE.I would prefer good homes for the vintage vacs. And I need the space they take up in my building more than some of the vacs.A building that I do NOT want to keep forever(I just lost a chance to sell as it was not near empty!).When there is a change in my health or to put it plainly, when I am DEAD there will be no more begging as I have done for interested collectors to add to their collections. My few remaining relatives will NOT beg and will probably NOT ASK "who wants what?".The first call will be to a crematorium and the next will be for a BIG dumpster!Whether in the northwest, northeast or HERE in TN you can say-"I'm glad I got that."OR"I can't believe they're GONE."

OHHHhhhh

This is making me sad.

True stories.  True relationships.  We all get older, yahda, yahda, yahda.  Others often don't value what we value.....  Truth is truth.

And you know 20+ years ago, people didn't understand or appreciate that there were such things as appliance collectors, or hoarders.   And some families probably felt resentful of family members who put all their energies into a business or hobby.  When they pass on, the anger comes out.

I've dealt with people who recently inherited a property or possessions from a deceased relative.  They start making weird decisions, and when they talk to you in relation to the item(s) at hand, it's like they aren't even talking TO you.

When you consider the age of some the antique vacuums some of us own, it's possible that they have passed through several peoples hands, and some of those people may well have passed on, perhaps decades ago.  Perhaps after living a perfectly long and healthy life.  And we are just one of the people who can claim to have owned such and such vacuum/appliance.

I still want to know why these have sat for 20 years.

Hi Jim, you are so right. We had a very nice talk back in either late April or early May when I found your phone number while cleaning out my phone book. At the time I did express interest in the possibility of purchasing a few uprights or at least parts, but was not sure as to what was going to happen to my employment. I just found out last Wednesday that my job ends sometime in September. Health issues, retirement and lack of customers will certainly do it for a business. Lack of or loss of employment can certainly affect a collector too.

Erick had a good point as well. People today do not appreciate the past and are all to willing to send it to the trash heap. I hope to hold on to what I currently have, but if things start to change I will post updates under the Vintage Forum.

response from seller

The sellers of this large lot seem upbeat, but kind of overwhelmed with the scale of items.

They bought it at an estate sale of a person who had the business in Tahoe, then closed the business and moved the contents with him to his new home in Oregon, and there it sat.

They aren't sure yet, what they're going to do with it all if it doesn't sell now.  He mentioned selling the new stuff individually, so there's hope for you Prince.  lol. You're going to need to move to a new and bigger place, or rent a storage unit.

For those interested, they will let you tour the items.  I wish I were closer and in need of more vacs. I only have the 60 + vacs.  A few more, maybe.  A semi trailer or two more, I don't think .....
