Vintage Vactric

Part 2

Unfortunatly the brochure is a fold out and too big to fit my scanner. Here is (most) of the rest of it. Did Apex sell theirs with a hand cleaner too.

Actually this works out as quite a good deal, for the cleaner was about 2/3 the price of the Hoover 160, and the tools for the 160 would have been 3 guinies (3/3/0) so the total Vactric package would have been less than a 160 without tools, with (presumably) better suction

Love the "Witch-Way" handle -- and, yes, the only other machine I've ever seen that on is the beautiful late 1930s streamlined Apex upright [although the Apex doesn't look anything like this Vactric]. It's actually a very cool design -- when the locking latch is loosened, you can swivel the motor head to and fro just by twisting the handle one way then the other. Hans Craig has one of these, I believe. Would be fun to see a video of it in action!

Hand cleaner

You are correct, it is very similar to the dustette although with the added convenience of interchangable tools. I have never seen one of these in real life, but I would have thought the Hoover design was patented so how they got around that i have no idea,

Later Airflo

It may be that the brochure scanned above is an earlier version of the cleaner as, in the picture below, it looks even more like the Apex. This catalogue is dated "1939-40 Season" so presumably was prepared in early to mid 1939, of course WW2 would have put a stop to all that.

That hand portable is almost identical to Apex's of the same era. A question for you: Did Apex make all the Vactric cylinders too, Al?

That IS!! an Apex!

Look at the height adjustment , headlight, shape of motor ETC, if it aint its a darn good copy, I used to have 2 of these, but sold them when I had to sell out.

Thanks for info guys

It is very interesting to know that the hand cleaner was an Apex design too, any pictures? The hand cleaners still show up occasionally on ebay, never seen the Airflo.

As far as I know the Vactric cylinders were their own design, although Apex designs did show up post WW2 as Bylock machines, but that is a whole different thread, which i have been meaning to post for ages.

wow

i just happen to be getting one complete with everything very soon! it is the cylinder style one with wheels instead of the sled

cant wait

A Vactric?

With wheels, it sounds like it is a Silent Q. One thing you need to be aware of is that these old Vactrics are very prone to the insulation breaking down.

ENSURE THAT YOU ONLY RUN THE CLEANER CONNECTED TO A SOCKET WITH A GROUND CONNECTION, IDEALLY WITH ITS OWN CIRCUIT BREAKER AND CHECK THE CONTINUITY OF THE GROUND BEFORE CONNECTING

If the cleaner comes with a two wire cord replace it with a grounded version and attach the ground to the body of the machine. Did you buy it from the UK?
